The Overwatch League’s inaugural season proved to be a massive success overall, though for some teams the results they achieved might have been lacking. The Shanghai Dragons had a shocker of a season, failing to win a single series to end on 0-40 despite making changes to their starting line-up. Now, it seems the fruits of these failures are blooming, with the organization making radical changes to their roster.
In an announcement posted on Twitter early this morning, the Shanghai Dragons parent company, NetEase, has released eight players from their roster. Cheng “Altering” Yage, Xu “Freefeel” Peixuan, Chen “Fiveking” Zhaoyu, Jing “Roshan” Wenhao, Liu “Xushu” Junjie, Chon “Ado” Gi-hyeon, He “Sky” Junjian, and Kim “Daemin” Dae-min have all been cut from the team, along with head coach Son “Kong” Jun-Young and analyst Jia.

As it stands, the only remaining players on the roster are Lu “Diya” Weida, Kim “Geguri” Se-yeon, and Lee “Fearless” Eui-seok, with no replacement players announced just yet. “The entire Shanghai Dragons crew thanks you for your dedications and contributions throughout the first season of the Overwatch League,” announced the team on Twitter. “You will always be part of the Dragons family. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.”
While the changes might seem drastic, it at least points to a desire by the team to rebuild from the ground up and start fresh for next years Overwatch League season. With the announcement of expansion teams joining the league, the competition is only going to get tougher, especially for a team that needs to rebuild as badly as the Shanghai Dragons.
