It looks like announcements for announcements are still as popular as ever.

There are many ways to build hype and interest for your upcoming game, with ad campaigns, teaser trailers, or tie-ins to other games and franchise. One of the more interesting ways to try and promote an upcoming release, and the way which has the most chance of backfiring completely, is to make announcements about upcoming announcements. Should the resulting reveal prove to be less exciting than they build-up, you run the risk of the situation becoming a joke.

The latest pre-announcement announcement comes from SNK, with their website being transformed into a giant countdown. A date has been set, for September 10th, with a timer counting down under the words “A New Dawn Rises”. This is the only clue of what SNK is apparently teasing as their next upcoming title. It’s unclear at this time if this is a possible sequel in one of their long running franchises, or if this is an entirely new IP.

We'll have to wait and see what SNK has in store

For comparison, here are the franchises listed on SNK’s website:

  • King of Fighters series
  • Fatal Fury series
  • Samurai Showdown
  • Metal Slug series
  • Art of Fighting series
  • Beast Busters
  • The Last Blade series
  • Savage Reign series
  • World Heroes series
  • Buriki One
  • Doki Doki Majo Shinpan series
  • Days of Memories series

Could we be seeing a new instalment in the King of Fighters franchise? The last game to release was King of Fighters 14 back in 2016, although new DLC characters for the game were released in April of this year. Personally, I’m hoping that Metal Slug gets the big release the franchise deserves, although I’m not holding my breath.
