Young Boys Bern supporters caused a stoppage in Sunday's match after throwing objects onto the field in an apparent protest against esports.

Supporters of Young Boys Bern, one of the soccer clubs in the Swiss Super League, have caused quite a disturbance during a match on Sunday between Young Boys and FC Basel. Apparently protesting esports, the fans threw tennis balls and console controllers onto the field, causing a stoppage just 15 minutes into the game.

Referees had to stop the match in order to clear away the objects thrown by fans, whilst supporters in the crowd unveiled banners to display, including a giant pause button and one that read “Scheiss E-Sports,” which roughly translates to “esports are shit,” according to a quick Google translate.

The match was again interrupted in the second half by FC Basel fans, before the game was ultimately concluded in Young Boys Bern’s favor, 7-1. At this stage it remains unclear as to the reason these fans are protesting esports. FC Basel does have three contracted FIFA players, who all had their contracts re-signed earlier this month, however Young Boys Bern does not appear to have any affiliation with esports at this time.

With tenuous links at best, and no real answers coming forth, it seems that fans of Young Boys Bern just really don’t like esports in general and have used the opportunity of the match against FC Basel to express that dislike. For now, esports will just have to struggle on knowing that Young Boys Bern supporters do not follow or support the growing increase of mainstream exposure and coverage. Whatever will we do.
