We were all young and did dumb things sometime in our lives. We understand your frustration, xxNarutolover69xxx. And yes, bigPAPAwheelie1972, there seems to be possibility that your youthful mistakes might get rectified. You made your account back in the PS3 heyday and you just aren’t willing to part with your account with so many trophies. We get it. Thankfully, PSN is rumored to be getting the option to change your username.
As with any rumor, it’s important to take it with a grain of salt until any official announcements are made. But, Kotaku has uncovered multiple bits of evidence suggesting that an “Edit Username” option is set to appear pretty soon.
Three anonymous sources spoke with Kotaku claim that they have been “fixing bugs, tweaking settings, and ensuring that their games are compatible with Sony’s plans.” Then, a fourth person working for an unnamed game studio came forward to share a photo with Kotaku that was from an internal Sony document with an “Edit Username” option in it. Kotaku did not provide photo evidence or provide any names for corroboration, so it is all currently just hearsay until anything official comes out about it.
Notably, Greg Miller of Kinda Funny spoke with Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Shawn Layden at PlayStation Experience (PSX) in December 2017 about PSN name changes. Fans recall that Layden commented that he hoped “you won’t have to ask (him) that question next PSX.” Considering that PSX is normally December, fans were hoping to get the reveal by December 2018 at this year’s PSX.
Oh, right. PSX was cancelled for 2018. While the PlayStation Experience is meant to be a way for Sony to give reveals and announcements going into the following year, PSX 2018 isn’t happening. I mean, cancelling an entire event because a single name change option isn’t ready to be revealed is unheard of! Kidding aside, Sony just didn’t have enough games to bring to the table for an event like that this year.
But, maybe we’ll still see this mythical username change option either way. Xbox Live has nearly always had the option in the modern era, offering the first change for free and additional changes are priced at $10. PlayStation would be wise to adopt a similar option in regards to loyal fans that kept their embarrassing our outdated names for so long instead of just making a new account.
Like we said earlier, this is all just a rumor for now. We will keep an eye on this one, though, just for you, XxDoOmEd_EdGeLoRd45623xX.
Speaking of Sony, they finally recently gave in to the fans about crossplay with other systems and are testing the waters with Fortnite.
