Rockstar Netherlands Let Terminally Ill Patient Play Red Dead Redemption 2

A terminally ill gamer's last wish was to play Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar made it come true.

This story was originally reported on GamersNet.NL, a Dutch gaming news site.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to be a huge success for Rockstar when it launches later this month. For Jurian, an avid fan of the franchise in the Netherlands, there was a risk he wouldn’t survive until the release date because of a chronic illness. His father reached out to Rockstar to enquire about the possibility of playing the game before it launched.

Jurian reached out to GamersNet.nl via their Facebook page. “Sadly, I am in the last weeks of my life. My treatment is over. Since 2004 I have been fighting a rare, chronic disease named neurofibromatosis type 2, which causes many “benign” tumors to grow in my body. I’ve survived for long, but I am done now.

“Since I was waiting with excitement for Red Dead Redemption 2, my father decided to contact the publisher, asking if they had a copy of the game preliminarily as exception. Rockstar Netherlands was willing to give it but didn’t have the clearance, so they contacted the headquarters who set me up with something nice very quickly. By the end of the week two employees from Rockstar Netherlands visited me, who gave me a private demonstration of the game. After an afternoon of playing they sadly took the game back with them.

“Seeing as I read an article a short while ago about a similar case with Nintendo, I thought I’d share, seeing as Rockstar did me a favor as well.”

It’s a wonderful gesture from Rockstar to offer Jurian the opportunity to experience the game. It’s worth noting that in the Reddit thread discussing the article, Rockstar were actually reluctant to let the story be published. This gesture wasn’t an attempt at generating positive PR coverage - Jurian reached out to GamersNet.nl himself. It’s a refreshing story to hear in this day and age, and we wish Jurian all the best.

Two thumbs up to Rockstar Netherlands...this was a timely effort that will be fondly remembered by both the gamer, his family and everyone else who reads about this !!
