Hearthstone Nerfs Include Giggling Inventor, Aviana and Mana Wyrm

Three of Hearthstone's strongest cards are being nerfed in an update later this week: Aviana, Mana Wyrm and Giggling Inventor.

With the release of The Boomsday Project earlier this year, Hearthstone players were introduced to one card that didn’t seem too powerful at first, but quickly became one of the most overpowered cards in the game. Giggling Inventor was the bane of many players’ existence and until now, Blizzard had refused to do anything about it. The cries for help have been heard though and Blizzard has announced three nerfs coming to the game later this week.

Giggling Inventor

A (5) mana 2/1 is incredibly understatted. When the battlecry is to summon two 1/2s with Taunt and Divine Shield? It becomes ridiculously powerful. Giggling Inventor was a must have card for pretty much every single deck in the game, even aggro ones. It was a no brainer in Arena and if someone played both against you, you’d be stalled for several turns.

Blizzard have completely murdered Giggling Inventor by increasing its cost. Not by one, but by two whole mana points. Giggling Inventor will now cost (7) mana. SEVEN! You’d think they’d just increase it to six, but apparently they tried that: “We initially tested this card at (6) mana in both the current Standard format as well as with cards that will be released in the future. Ultimately, we felt that its power level was still higher than is appropriate for a Neutral card with no build-around requirements.”

Mana Wyrm

A classic card, one that every new player gets introduced to almost right away. Mana Wyrm saw play in most Mage decks due to it being a (1) mana 1/3 which increased its attack for every spell cast by the owner. It wasn’t being widely complained about, as it was simply a solid card that everyone was familiar with. Rarely would it single-handedly win a game unless you got extremely lucky in the mulligan.

It’s now increased to (2) mana. According to Blizzard, they’re “moving away from powerful, early-game 1-drops.” They also mention that the existence of Mana Wyrm has steered them away from making powerful low-cost Mage spells. “At (2) mana, it will be easier to deal with Mana Wyrm the turn it’s played, and it will be harder to buff it with cheap spells early in the match.”

Aviana

The Aviana + Kun, the Forgotten King combo was incredibly powerful in Wild. It allowed players to drop both on the same turn, then have 10 more mana to follow up with in the same turn. It also saw a lot of play with Juicy Psychmelon, the four-cost spell that allows players to draw a (7), (8), (9) and (10) cost minion in the same turn.

Blizzard has increased Aviana’s cost to 10. Aviana and Kun can no longer be played together on the same turn without The Coin or Innervate, and Juicy Psychmelon can’t draw them both together. “This should make the combos Aviana and Kun produce less consistent, while still allowing decks that use the combos to exist for the players that enjoy playing them.”

All of these changes will be introduced to Hearthstone on Thursday, October 18. You can find Blizzard’s full blog post about the changes here. In other Hearthstone news, popular streamer Kripparrian received a phone call from Aquaman during a recent stream.
