Battle of the Strongest, a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 event, took place in someone's apartment. But just because it didn't take place in a fancy esports arena doesn't mean it wasn't one of the absolute best events of the year.

One of the most revered fighting games of all time, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, stil has a passionate playerbase that loves the game like no other. Every once in a while, MvC2 players will host events to spark interest in the game for a little bit, but nothing compares to the absolute love letter that took place this weekend.

Hosted by IFC Yipes, the Battle of the Strongest crammed 20 years of Marvel goodness into an over-seven-hour battle royale that pit some of the best players on the planet against one another to see who would emerge victorious. Some of the heaviest MvC2 hitters were in attendance, and the event was won by SmoothViper. J360 and Chris Matrix finished second and third, respectively.

Why Do People Love This Game So Much?

So, you watch enough Marvel 2, and you start seeing the same 8 or so characters, and see that it's a broken mess of a game, you think to yourself, "Why do people love this game?" By today's standards, the game would be universally panned upon release (see Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite) and all the broken stuff would be patched out for sure.

However, that's sort of the allure of Marvel 2 - it existed in a world before patches, before DLC, and before all the modern amenities current-gen games offer us. It's a reminder of a time when arcades were king, when games required meticulous execution to succeed at, and where broken characters weren't complained about online - they were dealt with as best they could. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 serves as a throwback to simpler times. Even though it's a broken mess, it's our broken mess.

Keeping the theme of MvC2 alive, Viscant revealed an esports circuit for the game that never was. Check it out!
