In a blockbuster move, Bungie today announced its independence from publisher Activision and will assume full publishing rights to the Destiny franchise.

Rejoice, you Guardians who complained about Activision ruining your favorite space-based action RPG game. Today, Bungie announced that it was separating from publishing giant Activision and assuming full publishing rights to the Destiny franchise.

This move comes eight years after the former Halo developer left Microsoft to start their own IP and begin a partnership with Activision. Says Bungie about the move, "We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects."

What Does This Mean For Destiny?

Well, it hopefully means less of the things many gamers dislike about Activision, namely micro-transactions. While the Eververse has been toned down since the launch of Destiny 2, there were rumblings around the Destiny 2 community that, one day, actual high-level gear would need to be purchased through the Eververse. At least for the near future, that fate seems unlikely.

It also means Bungie will be publishing their own future DLC, as per their written statement. "With Forsaken, we’ve learned, and listened, and leaned in to what we believe our players want from a great Destiny experience. Rest assured there is more of that on the way. We’ll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we’re looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond."

All we can do is wait and see how Destiny 2 will change. We certainly hope it's for the better. In the meantime, if you still want to take a shot at the Niobe Labs puzzle within the Black Armory, here's what we know so far.
