The dream is dead. The meme is dead. Mortal Kombat 11 won't include Shaggy as a guest character, as confirmed by NetherRealm Studios on the Kombat Kast.

Sometimes, even if something is a meme, it’s so good that you can’t help but wish it became a reality. Such was the case with various fan outpouring of desire and petitions for Shaggy to be in Mortal Kombat 11. Unfortunately, during the Kombat Kast, dreams were crushed. Not only will Shaggy be absent from Mortal Kombat 11, but the claim has been made that he will never be in the game.

The confirmation was made by Community Manager Tyler Lansdown of NetherRealm Studios on February 5, 2019 on the Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Kast. During a Q&A portion of the stream, Lansdown addressed the situation about Shaggy and the rest of Mystery, Inc. Bluntly put, it’s not happening ever. You can check out the full answer in the Twitch clip below.

It’s likely a matter of licensing more than anything. Where the rights owners’ for the likes of Alien, Predator, Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th and more fit right into a gory Mortal Kombat universe, the folks at Hanna-Barbera are probably less okay with having their star pencil-neck scaredy cat get horribly maimed by the cast of Mortal Kombat. Everybody’s pretty cool about it when Shaggy looks like a surprise bad ringer, knocking the likes of Goku around and going toe to toe with the equally deadly Isabelle. They have to remember that in a game like Mortal Kombat, everyone would also likely be able to tear poor Shaggy limb from limb.

It’s unfortunate that the Add Shaggy To Mortal Kombat 11 Petition doesn’t seem to go further than this (for now), but on the flip side, it did make it to the NetherRealm Studios decision table and ultimately onto the Q&A. Maybe at the end of the day, that’s the best that a good meme can hope for… outside of being in the actual game. Rest in Peace, Shaggy Rogers Mortal Kombat 11 dreams.

In any case, you can check out the list of characters that will be in Mortal Kombat 11, including the recently included Kano and Kabal.
