BioWare and Electronic Arts’ sci-fi loot n’ shoot Anthem has certainly had a rough start out of the gate to say the least, but for those who bought the game anyways, there may be another issue to add to the list with the game on PlayStation 4. A new bug is reportedly shutting PS4 consoles down or making them unable to power on entirely, as reported by multiple players.
The Issue With Anthem On PS4
Reports that PlayStation 4 Anthem players were experiencing hard crashes on their PS4 systems when playing Anthem started appearing as early as February 25, 2019. Multiple users on the Anthem technical forums reported the game shutting down their PS4s both during the game and when closing down the application. In some of the instances, players mentioned that the PS4 powered back on and acted as though it had been incorrectly turned off, such as what occurs when the system is unplugged or given a hard restart by holding the power button, as described in the forum post below by user bosstherapy40.
In the most extreme of instances, some players PS4s would not turn back on after Anthem reportedly shut the console down. Reddit user TheMadTitanGauntlet reported that after several times when Anthem shut his console down, it would eventually not turn back on. Apparently, PlayStation Support has been able to do little for users when this occurs beyond a possible refund for the game via the AskPlayStation Twitter account, but a positive result is not guaranteed. Neither BioWare nor Sony have addressed the issue in official capacity as of this writing.
What Is Causing Anthem To Break PS4s?
So far, several reports lining up from users have stressed that Anthem puts extra stress on the fan of the PS4. This means that the game is running the system so hard that it’s likely causing it to overheat. In the case of extreme temperatures over a long period of time, it’s feasible that this could cause the system to shut down automatically. It’s just as possible that multiple instances of this could permanently damage the system. Unfortunately, if this is the case, the best solution may be to play Anthem only in limited doses in order to keep from overheating the PlayStation 4 hardware.
The safest solution, of course, might be to go ahead and stop playing at all until Sony and/or BioWare have determined a solution. We will have more on this story as it develops. For those of you braving the risk, or non-PS4 players, be sure to check out the update coming to the loot system in Anthem.
