This coming Sunday, Simpsons fans will get to see the latest episode of the 30th season for the show, and this one is going to be pretty interesting for the world of video games, as it has everything to do with Esports. Taking the popular show into the realm of Esports couldn't come at a better time, as the final week of the League of Legends European Championship regular spring season takes place this week.
In a tweet sent out by show writer Al Jean last Wednesday, he teased this Sunday’s show with a snapshot of the subject matter. The photograph reveals what looks like a League of Legends clone called Conflict of Enemies being played. As well as some very familiar Simpsons
Player cameras show that Bart Simpson will be joined on his Esports squad by Milhouse Van Houten, Nelson Muntz, Martin Prince, and Krusty the Clown’s daughter (played by Natasha Lyonne) Sophie Krustofsky.
If we are to take a wild stab at who’s playing which role in the not-League of Legends rift, it looks like Bart will be playing in the top-lane, Milhouse will be the team’s
One of the promotional images (below), tweeted out by Esports consultant Rod Breslau, even shows what looks to be SK Telecom T1 player, and mega League of Legends superstar Faker, playing alongside a Milhouse-less squad.
The Plot
The official IMDb description for the episode, titled “E my Sports”, states that “Homer discovers a passion for coaching Bart in video game competitions; Lisa's plan to bring Homer back to reality creates chaos.” which leads us to believe that Lisa Simpson may just recruit some Esports stars in an attempt to knock Bart’s squad out of contention.

As you can also see in the promo shot, Bart is wearing a very intense face. It turns out, this might play a lot into the actual story plot of the episode. According to Breslau, FOX’s The Simpsons hired the folks at Riot Games (the makers of League of Legends) to consult on the episode airing this Sunday. Part of the plot revolves around Bart being a “one-trick” -- which means he is immensely talented at a specific character, but not much else -- that loses his lane and causes a huge stir within his team.
This subject matter, as it pertains to Esports, hits home for a lot of gamers out there. It’s a pretty large point of contention within the competitive market. Whether or not you and the rest of your teammates have to adapt and build around a one-trick, or deal with a toxic player in a competitive and meaningful environment, it’s not a good time. It’s going to be interesting to see how the long-running family cartoon handles Bart’s griefing, and fans of Esports and League of Legends all over the world are filled with anticipation for Sunday’s airing.
