It's a great weekend to be a GWENT fan. The card game from the Witcher universe has its first expansion on the horizon, and we've just been given the launch trailer and pre-order bonus information.

While the card-slinging world has all of their eyeballs glued to the GWENT Masters Open #8 taking place in Poland this weekend, the folks at CD Projekt Red gave us a brand new trailer, and details about the new GWENT expansion; The Crimson Curse.

The Crimson Curse expansion is the first card addition to the popular Witcher minigame-turned-Esport, and fans have been rabidly howling at the moon in anticipation for more GWENT cards since it was announced back when March started.

Arriving in less than two weeks, GWENT players can pick up the Crimson Curse expansion on PC and Consoles on March 28th, 2019. For those who like extra goodies, and incentives, CD Projekt Red has also detailed a Pre-order Pack.

The Crimson Curse

Madness and despair fall upon the world. The Blood Moon has begun to rise, and with it, new monsters wake and walk the lands.

We’ve awaited this far too long… hunted by those who live in comfort and opulence.

No more.”

GWENT’s first card expansion brings some dark magic to the land of the Witcher. The expansion will see more than 100 new cards added to the trading card game. These cards include 31 neutral cards and 14 faction cards per faction.

It’s quite a nice spread, to be honest. It ensures that no matter which deck or faction you prefer to play with and build out, you’ll have a ton of new cards to work into your rotation. The folks at CD Projekt Red detailed a handful of cards that include the Dryads of Brokilon, Cintrian mages, Toussaint knights, Svalblod cultists, Vampires, and many more monsters.

Card art and some brief descriptions of some plucked cards from the expansion can be found in on the GWENT blogThe GWENT: Crimson Curse expansion trailer (below) tells more of the story behind the card games first ever booster, and even shows off some of the key cards in the new set.

Pre-Order Bonus

As this is the first expansion for the popular card game, CD Projekt Red have a lot to prove. The GWENT developers seek to solidify both the game casually, and the Esport competitive series into the mainstream and they have been doing a really great job putting the effort in.

Available until the launch of the Crimson Curse expansion on March 28th, players can pick up the Pre-order Pack for $39.99 USD. With it, you get 40 Crimson Curse Kegs (Card Kegs are “packs” of cards, and contain 5 cards per Keg), an awesomely gruesome animated Crimson Curse card back, and a Blood Armor skin for your Unseen Elder Leader.

Some fans are mentioning in the forums that a forty-dollar expansion is a bit steep, especially if you consider that many players have been hoarding Kegs for months because they’ve already unlocked all of the standard edition cards. Much like other lootboxes (like Overwatch), the “drop” from your lootbox is calculated when the box is opened, and not when it is earned. So, hoarding Kegs in anticipation for other events or expansions is a strong play.

It’s unclear as to whether or not the Crimson Curse expansion will cost the same $40 when it comes out and the pre-order incentive is no longer active, but we can assume that it will. There’s also no word on whether or not the remaining GWENT Masters tournaments this year will include the Crimson Curse cards.

Whether you’re watching this weekend’s GWENT Major event, of just scrumming around in the ranks lobbies, the Crimson Curse is looming, and you get some pretty sweet goodies if you buy into it now.
