In the final conference bracket tournament before the best teams in the country head to the NCAA Final Four Fan Fest, the Collegiate Rocket League Northern Conference was decided in a heated match between Akron and Illinois.

We’re just a few weeks away from the Collegiate Rocket League Spring Invitational that will take place during the NCAA Final Four celebration, and we now know who will be representing the fourth and final Collegiate Rocket League conference. Only a week after the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute took the East, the Akron Zips Gold defeated the impressive University of Illinois to win the Northern Conference and will head to Minneapolis this April.

The squad from the University of Akron came into the tournament with a lot of promise, but a hefty hill to climb.

Beginning their journey to the crown, the Zips Gold faithful had to clench the arms of their chairs as Akron took on the mighty University of Wisconsin, but came through without dropping a single game. They repeated that effort twice more on the road to the top, sweeping the Ohio State team and the team from Nebraska.

After the big win, the posed boys from Akron asked their cameraman to spin the camera around in their state-of-the-art Esports facility, and it was clear that the team has a small, but absolutely die-hard fan-base at their school. They won the Northern title and a $7,500 scholarship prize.

On the other side, the University of Illinois had a similar treasure hunt, defeating Carleton 3-0, then the Missouri University of Science & Technology with the same score, before taking the series against the University of Guelph 3-1.

Of course, you read the headline, so you know that they didn’t pull out the win in the end. The University of Illinois fell in the Northern Conference Finals to the winners the Akron Zips Gold.

The future is very bright for the Rocket League team from Illinois. They looked extremely strong on both ends of the field and made quick work of most of their opponents on their way to the conference finals.

The Final Four

In order to claim the title of Collegiate Rocket League (CRL) Spring ‘19 Champions, 64 teams from all over the continent shot it out on the field in four conferences, split into separate tournaments, that started back in mid-February.

The University of Akron team, as the Northern Conference Champs, joins the Western Champion University of Redlands, the Eastern Champion Rensselaer, and the Southern Champions in the University of Florida. These four conference teams will go head-to-head in one big final showdown party that is being hosted at the NCAA Final Four Fan Fest starting on April 5th, in Minneapolis.
