In the much anticipated Gearbox Official livestream for a new Borderlands game, CEO Randy Pitchford was quick to say Borderlands is not going to be a battle royale game.

As we get to see what a new Borderlands game is going to be from the Gearbox Official livestream, we now at least know that it’s not going to be a battle royale game. In the opening minutes of the livestream, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford was fast to say that among the many rumors, Borderlands 3 is not going to include a battle royale mode.

Gearbox took the stage at PAX East on March 28, 2019 to deliver on the much-teased Borderlands announcement that they first revealed earlier in March. Among the rumors that went rampant immediately about what a Borderlands game might look like in 2019, battle royale inevitably came up, with many speculating on what Borderlands battle royale might look like. While Randy Pitchford admitted that while “battle royale is fun,” he also quelled the rumor in saying “that’s not what our game is.” You can see a clip of the de-confirmation of Borderlands battle royale below.

It would appear that a Borderlands 3 is going to avoid the trend of battle royale, which might not be a bad thing. Where many other shooters like Battlefield V and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are creating modes to follow the genre, it’s not something that a Borderlands game needs to shoehorn in to be good. There are many fans out there that are probably relieved that Gearbox is going to instead focus on what it does best and improve the iconic loot n’ shoot gameplay and quirky humor the franchise was built on.

With Borderlands 3 finally revealed, for better or worse, we now know that it is not going to be a battle royale game. The latest Gearbox co-op loot n’ shoot isn’t going to be going with the flow of the video games industry in trying to force a free-for-all battle mode into their latest game, and that is probably for the best.
