The first Nintendo-sponsored Super Smash Bros Ultimate tournament has concluded, and the Southeast Region has emerged victorious.

After weeks of action spanning the entire North American continent, the Super Smash Bros Ultimate North America Open came to an end at PAX East 2019, and when the Smash smoke cleared it was the Southeast region’s team, Wrath, Devonte and Poltergust, that emerged victorious.

The North America Open’s final played out a little differently from the rest of the tournament, where instead of 1v1 matches the qualifiers teamed up in 3v3 Squad Strike matches, with four teams of three qualifiers squaring off in these contests. In the end the Southeast trio faced off against the team from the Northeast region, and thanks to Poltergust’s adept Wii Fit Trainer play the Southeast was able to win the day.

The winning team won themselves special edition Gold Super Smash Bros Ultimate Pro Controllers for the Switch, but more importantly they’ve also qualified for the newly announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate World Championship 2019 3v3 which will take place in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 8. Regions featured in the World Championships include North America, Europe, Japan and Australia/New Zealand, and more information will be posted to the official Nintendo E3 2019 website in the coming weeks.

To the victors go the spoils...including this sleek Pro controller.

It seems like yesterday that Nintendo was resisting the idea of competitive gaming, attempting to remove Super Smash Bros Melee from EVO 2013 and getting rightly smeared across the community for it. Now it seems the BIg N is all N on competition, and the growing community the company has generated could not be more pleased. This World Championship will be a tournament to watch.
