It was a little before PAX East that we received another trailer for the Samurai Shodown reboot coming Summer 2019. We got a look at most of the roster, which was confirmed shortly after to be 16 characters. 13 were characters that appeared in previous games, but three were set to be all new characters never seen before. During a live reveal event, we finally got a look at those three characters. It looks like Darli Dagger, Wu-Ruixiang, and Yashamaru Kurama are the three that will be joining the familiar Samurai Shodown Roster.
The live reveal event took place late on April 4, 2019, announced earlier in the day via SNK Twitter. After various live-action traditional Japanese performances, we got a fresh new reveal. Although entirely in Japanese, we did get our first look at the new characters. The saw sword wielding pirate, Darli Dagger, had already been confirmed during PAX East weekend. However, we also got our first look at Wu-Ruixiang and Yashamaru Kurama. You can see their first appearance in the clip below.
You might have also noticed that a date was finally announced as well. It would appear Samurai Shodown is coming on June 27, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One. With Darli, Wu, and Yashamaru, the final starting roster for Samurai Shodown is complete. Darli has a fittingly brutish style for a pirate character while Wu seems more demure and seemingly uses a form of sorcery. Yashamaru Kurama in particular seemed to take up a lot of time in the trailer. The naginata-wielding samurai may end up being a new focus of this fresh reboot, or maybe the game’s big bad, considering he looks a bit sinister and original antagonist Amakusa hasn’t made an appearance.
