The first details regarding the specs of the next-gen PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, such as its AMD CPU, SSD, ray tracing capabilities, and more, were revealed by Sony's Lead System Architect Mark Cerny.

Looking to get avoid future leaks that were likely to happen with devkits of the console being out in the open, Sony officially announced the first details regarding the specs of the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 (PS5) next-gen console that will be the next major entry in the legendary video game platform's life. The first details regarding the specs of the next-gen PlayStation 5 console were revealed to Wired by Sony Lead System Architect Mark Cerny and gave fans a first look at the powerful machine, which includes an AMD CPU, Solid State Drive (SDD), ray tracing capabilities, and much more, that they will be playing on in the future.

PlayStation 5 (PS5) Next-Gen Specs - AMD CPU, SSD, Ray Tracing

Mark Cerny explained that the PlayStation 5 next-gen console will be utilizing a CPU based on the 3rd generation of the AMD Ryzen line and will contain an eight-core processor of the brand new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture.

The PS5 will also consist of a GPU that will be a "custom variant of Radeon's Navi family" and will support ray tracing technology. Ray Tracing is a technology that allows for the modeling of the travel of light. This, in turn, will allow the PlayStation 5 next-gen console to display shadows, light, and reflections much more naturally. This technology will also allow for more advanced audio development, according to Mark Cerny. Ray Tracing in the PS5 would be the first time that a video game console has been able to effectively manage the powerful technology.

Also revealed by Mark Cerny when discussing the details of the specs for the future gaming device is that it will have an SSD installed instead of a hard drive. This will allow for much faster loading times, game world rendering speeds and much quieter operational functions.

Finally, Marck Cerny gave fans a great sigh of relief when it was explained that the PlayStation 5 next-gen console will indeed support backwards compatibility when it comes to PS4 games.

While it was also discussed that the PS5 will be able to support 8K resolution for its titles, the ability for it to run these titles at an optimal frame rate and the low prospect of finding a display screen that can support this high-resolution means that a full-fledged 8K gaming experience will likely not be suitable even for the next-gen piece of hardware.
