Capcom is looking to strengthen its esports and creative licensing portfolio, announcing a brand new business entity called Capcom Media Ventures to focus on these areas.

Capcom has announced a new business entity focusing solely on esports and media licensing, officially separating the development side of the publisher from its competitive counterpart.

The Street Fighter League will be among the events covered under the new CMV entity.

The new venture, called Capcom Media Ventures or CMV, will be in charge of events like the Capcom Pro Tour, now in its seventh season, and the Street Fighter League. It will also head all licensing of Capcom properties for things like movies and television

“Los Angeles has become a major hub for esports production and it’s one of the global centers of Street Fighter fandom,” said Capcom Media Ventures CEO Midori Yuasa in the official press release. “Our presence in the city gives us intimate access to those resources and community thought leaders. In addition, there are obvious benefits for our media licensing team to be based so close to our Hollywood partners.”

The press release goes on to detail some of the licensing projects currently in development, including the Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild animated special as well as “numerous licensed films and shows in development” including some based on Monster Hunter and Mega Man among others.

Separating the esports division of Capcom from the development side is a savvy move, as it will allow a full team of people to put all of their effort into improving the company’s esports stature. Street Fighter V has been prominent, but after that the Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Battle for the Stones was underwhelming and anything else they’ve done is easily forgotten. Granted Capcom always had esports specialists on staff, but the creation of this entity can only be a good thing for Capcom’s esports output.
