Elemental Orbs in Dauntless are integral to upgrading your gear. Here's how to collect these precious resources and make yourself stronger!

Phoenix Labs’ Dauntless is still going heavy since its launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Over 4 million players means a lot of new faces discovering the Shattered Isles and all of its secrets. With that in mind, there are some pretty important little things to keep track of. Once you’ve collected your Daily Deathmarks and decided on your favorite weapon, you need to make yourself stronger. To do that, you’re going to need elemental orbs, and a lot of them. But how do you collect them? No worries. That’s where we come in. Here’s how to get your hands on plenty of orbs in Dauntless and what they do.

As you may or may not have noticed, orbs are required to level up your gear. Once you build a weapon or piece of armor, you can increase its power by spending orbs and Rams (Dauntless’ regular gold currency) to level it up. Up to +5 level, you’ll only need orbs and Rams to level up gear (300 Power for weapons and 75 Power for individual armor pieces). Past that, you’ll need some special items, but orbs will always be required. The type of orb you need will depend on the element of the weapon. Neutral orbs level up neutral weapons, blaze orbs level up fire weapons, etc.

Each level-up on your gear takes a specific amount and type of orbs, designated near the bottom of the crafting screen.

So how do you get them? Well that part revolves around Patrols. Normal targeted monster “Pursuit” hunts won’t get you any orbs. You have to choose the Patrol option in the Map menu. From there, you choose the element you want to focus on and embark on a Patrol hunt. The main difference between Patrol and Pursuit hunts is that you don’t get to choose the Behemoth you pursue. It’s randomly chosen from the elemental pool you’re hunting. That means on a Frost Patrol you could end up against a relatively easy Skraev or a tough-as-nails Pangar. For that reason, you’d best bring some very good gear to a Patrol hunt and/or wish for some good luck.

Each Patrol hunt guarantees you a 10 orb reward, plus whatever extra orbs the Behemoth drops, but there are also bonus orb opportunities. Every day, you can collect extra orb rewards from Daily Patrol Bonuses. That means that 10 orbs becomes 20 and potentially more - enough to level up a weapon two and a half times and level up an armor piece to +5. Once you finish your bonus reward Patrols, you have to wait 24 hours for your next Daily Patrol Bonus, but you can still go on Patrol hunts and collect more orbs if you need them, so if you’re really jonesing to get an armor piece or weapon up to fighting form, there’s no reason to stop hunting. It’s also worth noting that Daily Patrol Bonuses carry over day to day, meaning if you miss a couple days, they just stack and you can cash in on several Daily Patrol Bonuses in one sitting.

The element of Patrol you undertake will determine the orb reward you get for completing it. Use this to target the gear you want to upgrade.
