There's an extensive amount of lore in Magic: The Gathering, and it looks like Netflix has brought on the Russo brothers and more to direct and distill it into a new animated MtG series.

Magic: The Gathering has had decades to develop characters, lore, and connections between its myriad library of cards. When you think about it, it’s kind of crazy there hasn’t been a notable show based on it, but that’s changing soon. Wizards of the Coast and Netflix have teamed up to deliver a new MtG Netflix series and they’ve brought on the likes of Avengers: Endgame Directors Joe and Anthony Russo to direct it.

The Magic: The Gathering Netflix series was announced on June 3, 2019 via the official MtG twitter and in an exclusive at Entertainment Weekly. With Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina acting as lead writers on the project, the series is set to focus in on the Planeswalkers - good and evil wizards who have waged numerous battles in the MtG lore. Bardel Studio and Octopie Network will lead the animation for the series. For many of the creative forces on the project, this is one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Russos themselves have been into MtG since its early days.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around,” claimed the Russos. “So being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,”

This comes on top of the fact that Magic: The Gathering has been having a banner year in 2019 in terms of competition and new opportunities to play. The online game MtG: Arena is running strong and the competitive year of Mythic Tournaments have a lot of passionate players actively vying to prove themselves the best with high-stakes prize pools on the line.

Whatever we get out of the new Netflix MtG animated series, it will be awesome to see an expanded vision of the artistic and amazing world that the Wizards of the Coast have built with Magic: The Gathering over the course of decades. Which cards in the Magic universe do you want to see brought to live on the TV screen?
