At the NHL Awards Ceremony, it was revealed that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews would grace the cover of EA NHL 20, which releases on September 13.

It's official - Auston Matthews is the NHL 20 cover star. Matthews joins Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes as the latest EA cover athlete - and his future is just as bright as Mahomes'. While the former first overall pick hasn't collected an MVP award just yet - there's no doubt one will be coming his way in the near future. The official NHL Twitter account shared Matthews' purple-themed cover and a new trailer.

“The cutting-edge Real Player Motion (RPM) Tech continues to evolve the way that gamers showcase their mastery,” EA Sports said in an official statement about NHL 20. “This year’s gameplay introduces Signature Shots that replicate the most recognizable shot styles of the biggest NHL stars, including P.K. Subban’s booming slapshot wind-up, Auston Matthews’ half toe-drag wrist shot, and Alex Ovechkin’s seamless one-timer.”

Admittedly, not much was revealed outside of that, but more details should be coming in the next few weeks. It's clear the focus seems to be on the personalization of the game's "World of Chel" mode. The initial Madden 20 trailer didn't reveal much either, but more details soon followed and we even got a full beta too, courtesy of EA Madden's social team. Hopefully, we'll receive a beta for NHL 20 in the same vain, if not just for bug checks and online stability tests.

Matthews is the first member of the storied Toronto Maple Leafs franchise to receive a cover shot in the worldwide release. He follows former Leaf James van Riemsdyk who appeared on the special edition covers of NHL 14 and 15, and William Nylander, who appeared on the Swedish cover of NHL 19. He's also the first American to grace the game's cover since the Blackhawk's Patrick Kane back in 2010.
