Is Electronic Arts pushing gambling on kids? Kyle Fox joins in on GG Podcast to discuss EA in Belgium, esports mental health, and NBA athletic courage in an earthquake.

It’s a new week, which means a new episode of GG Podcast. Rick Fox, Jace Hall, and Todd Roy go right back to the nitty gritty of gambling controversy in video games and whether or not loot boxes are gambling. This time around Kyle Fox joins in on the conversation, not as a caller, but as a guest in the studio. Meanwhile, the squad discusses the recent earthquakes in the California area and the mental health and wellness of esports athletes.

Episode 7 of the GG Podcast - "Video Games Encourage Kids To Gamble!” - can be listened to in its entirety just below.

Kicking off the show, the GG Podcast talks about the recent earthquakes. Notably,  Michael "shroud" Grzesiek was on stream during the largest earthquake, which rated a 7.1 on the Richter Scale, but continued to keep playing. Jace adores the drive to keep playing (Shroud didn’t seem to be in too much danger thankfully!) and questions whether Rick and other athletes would do the same.

The squad also returns to the topic of loot boxes and gambling that was discusses on the previous episode - Crunch Time. With Electronic Arts representatives recently having gone to Belgium to argue against legislation that would ban loot boxes outright, Kyle joins in this time as Jace remains stalwart in his stance that loot boxes are not gambling while Rick argues the opposite. Kyle shares his opinion as well, bringing up the difference of cosmetic microtransactions vs microtransactions that can change the gameplay, creating a pay-to-win environment. Jace argues that gameplay mechanic purchase is not so much a gamble as it is straight-up payment for services.

Finally, the GG Podcast takes a dip into the topic of the mental health and wellness of esports players. With esports having developed its own network of sports medicine, Rick speaks to the Echo Fox facilities and their employment of health professionals, trainers, therapists, and more. On the topic of what can drive a player or esports athlete to neglect themselves, Rick Fox shares his personal experience as an athlete and the difference between playing through pain and playing through an actual injury. The squad also mental strain of being an esports athlete, including performance anxiety and mental breakdowns from stress. Todd Roy shares the story of Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman and his issues following a loss at a major Smash Bros tournament, covered in the Going Pro documentary.
