The curse is truly lifted and the Dragons are flying. They put a 3-1 win against the New York Excelsior to move forward in Overwatch League Stage 3's Playoffs.

It wasn’t long ago that the Shanghai Dragons were one of the most unfortunate teams in all of Overwatch League. They went an astounding 42 straight games without a win and many wondered just what it would take for them to finally be able to seize a W. Flash forward to 2019 Overwatch League Year 2, Stage 3 where not only is Shanghai a winning team - They just beat the favored New York Excelsior in the Playoffs in a spectacular upset.

It was on Thursday evening, July 11, 2019 that the Shanghai Dragons and NYXL threw down in the playoffs. Shanghai had been on the rise for much of this stage now, but nobody expected them to take out New York, let by the impeccable Saebyeolbe and JJoNak. Even so, Shanghai kicked things off fast and furiously, making a statement with a 2-0 win to kick things off on Oasis and Map 1. NYXL held Shanghai back in Hollywood for a 2-1 map win, but throughout the night it was a back-and-forth fight of tooth and nails that ended with Shanghai finally taking it all, 3-1 in Gibraltar and 3-1 in the overall set.

Many attribute the recent growing success of Shanghai to the addition of Young-jin "Gamsu" Noh, who came on board the Dragons’ roster in February 2019, coming over from the Boston Uprising squad. Since his arrival, something has seemed to click just a bit more for the Shanghai Dragons. They found their first win with Gamsu shortly after his arrival. Just as well, against NYXL, Gamsu was impeccable in his use of Wrecking Ball. He broke lines, disrupted the Excelsior, and made sure his team had room to take objectives.

It’s not a one-person game by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s no doubt that Shanghai has figured it out since Gamsu showed up and now they have a playoff win to their name to show for it. Can the Dragons take it all the way to the Stage 3 finals? Their next task is a daunting one with the Vancouver Titans on Saturday, July 13. If they can take a win off one of the best teams in the League, they may very well take it all in Stage 3.
