Riot Games has been working on League of Legends since 2009 and it is the only game to the dev’s name. That’s about to change. It’s no secret that whispers have gone around for a long time that Riot might put resources into something outside of the world-renowned MOBA. Well, at Evo 2019, founder and Riot Games employee Tom Cannon just opened the lid on the rumors: Riot Games is working on a fighting game.
Tom Cannon made the confirmation of a Riot fighting game on August 2, 2019 on the first opening day of Evo 2019. Clipped by esports personality and consultant Rod “Slasher” Breslau, Cannon opens up in an interview about the connection between Evo and Riot, and a few facts on the often-rumored, but until-now never-announced new project. “Back in 2016 when we joined forces with Riot,” Tom explained. “I said that we were going to go in the hole for a while. I want to be able to let people in on maybe the worst-kept secret in the universe. I can confirm that we are working on a fighting game for Riot.”
Cannon goes on to speak to the potential of a game with Riot. He cites previous free-to-play fighting game Rising Thunder as a kick-off point to the project.
“The reason we did Rising Thunder in the first place,” Cannon continued. “is because we felt like fighting games deserved to be enjoyed by way more people. As big as they are, we think it has the potential to get bigger.”
Indeed, with the pedigree of character design, patching, and global reach that Riot has thanks to League of Legends, a fighting game in the hands of the developer has every opportunity to really be something amazing. It remains to be seen what a Riot fighting game will look like, but with this confirmation, we can’t wait to get our first look at it.
