Activision has opened the gates early, letting players into the Gunfight mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The 2v2 open alpha for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now live on PS4.

The servers were originally planned to come online later today, but Activision has chosen to surprise fans by opening the floodgates early. Players who’ve downloaded the free alpha can now jump into online matches and test out the latest title in the Call of Duty series.

The 2v2 open alpha is available to all players on PS4, whether you have PS Plus or not. If you want to jump in, head to the PlayStation Store page and start downloading. It runs up a chunky size of over 35GB though, so be prepared for a little wait if your internet isn’t up to speed.

The open alpha will be most players’ first look at the new Gunfight mode which sees both sides spawn with the same randomized loadout to fight it out. Any weapon can appear in your loadout, even rocket launchers, so each round requires adapting to the weapons at hand.

Right now only three maps have been made available, Pine, King and Speedball, but Activision plans to roll out two more over the course of the weekend. Docks and Stack are the two levels waiting in the wings for entry, though we don’t know when they’ll be added to the alpha.

COD fans on Xbox One and PC may have missed out this time around, but there’s another test on the way soon. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Open Beta will run on all platforms between September 21-23, with early access available for those who preorder. Again, PS4 owners will get an extra chance to hop in from September 12-16. What’s included in the Open Beta has yet to be confirmed, but we expect it’ll give us a look at larger multiplayer matches than the 2v2 alpha.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is due to release October 25 on all platforms.
