Is Overwatch 2 coming? It seems increasingly likely after a leak this past weekend. Moreover, it would appear that we’re going to have our first look at what exactly Overwatch 2 is when BlizzCon is upon us. Will it be an all-new game or a revamp of everything going on in the original Overwatch? Here’s what we know about the possible reveal of Overwatch 2 at this time.
The Overwatch 2 BlizzCon rumors were originally reported on October 27, 2019 by esports consultant Rod Breslau in a story on ESPN. ESPN reportedly obtained a training document as to the itinerary for Overwatch’s appearance at BlizzCon, which takes place Friday, November 1, 2019 through Sunday, November 3, 2019. In the document, a small “2” in orange highlight is placed alongside the usual Overwatch symbol.
Speculation has begun as to whether or not this will mean a fully separate game or simply a new chapter and revamp attached to the original Overwatch. However, there are a few things the document clarifies about the Overwatch 2 possibilities. For one, there will supposedly be a PVE-focused co-op mode for up to four players, with the first mission apparently set in Rio de Janeiro. The PVE mode is expected to be announced as playable this weekend. Alongside this new mode and mission, there are also seemingly new in-game items and “hero talents” being added to the game. Whether hero talents will be stat or ability bonuses or altogether new abilities for heroes is unknown at this time.
Finally, the PVP playlist isn’t being left out of the rumors. Reportedly, a new PVP mode called Push will be shown with all of the fresh content at BlizzCon, being the first new mode to join the competitive playlist since 2015. Push will be debuted on a new Toronto map.
Blizzard has had a rough road recently with the controversy surrounding the initial banning of Hong Kong Hearthstone player Ng "blitzchung" Wai Chung and two Hearthstone casters. Will BlizzCon have enough to bring some goodwill back to the company image? It remains to be seen.
