Here at Twin Galaxies, we love a good high score and a record time. So each week we look deep in the wealth of Undisputed and Verified scores in the Twin Galaxies Adjudication Archive and dig up some spectacular recent scores! On this edition of the Scoreboard Spotlight, we takek a look at the temptation of dark magic, the necessity of a tidy asteroid field, driving with a license, eating spinach, and the perils of attacking a fortress.
AJMetalLoard - Magic Sword: Heroic Fantasy (MAME) - Points [Single Player Only]
AJMetalLord refused the awesome power of the Black Orb and ascended to the top of the leaderboard with a new TG world record on the hack 'n slash arcade title Magic Sword: Heroic Fantasy. In the highlight video, AJMetalLord strides into throne room as the Brave One ready to fight the evil Drokmar. What follows is a furious battle where AJMetalLord conducts a continuous jumping attack until the dark lord is defeated, offering up the ultimate talisman of evil power before it's destroyed for a new record score of 14,647,537 points.
Nichlas Brinkmann - Moon Shuttle (Arcade) - Points
After years of careful preparation, Nichlas Brinkmann Hess blasted off to outer space and returned with a new TG world record on the arcade classic Moon Shuttle. Around 2012, Nichlas started to play the side-scrolling shooter and soon struck up a friendly competition with Gyruss world record holder Kim Köbke. Fast forward to 2022: Kim brought out his Moon Shuttle PCB for Nichlas' high score run at The Shed, and the rest is history – a successful mission and a new high score of 34,650 points.
John Brissie - Gran Turismo 5 (PlayStation 3) - Lisence Tests - B-3 - Fastest Time
John Brissie received full marks for his license tests in the 2007 Subaru Swift and earned a third place finish on Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3. Yes, there were no gleaming F1 cars on the race track for this contest – this was the License Test B-3 track with a focus on “out-and-out” cornering in a super minicar. John did his homework and finished with a fastest time of 25.811 seconds.
Wade Wittmer - Popeye [Nintendo / Parker Bros] (Atari 800XL) - Points
Wade Wittmer took a retro-turn as our favorite barrel-armed sailor with his submission on Popeye for the Atari 800XL computer. Setting off to rescue Olive Oyl, Wade had to be tough and eat his spinach with sea witches and of course Popeye's nemesis Bluto standing in his way - every step of the way. In the highlight video, Wade used his sea legs to keep moving back and forth to catch the falling notes while Bluto's annoying attempts to knock him down. With 163,050 points, Wade clinched second place on the TG leaderboard.
Snowflake - Fortress of Narzod (Vectrex) - Game 1 - Points
Snowflake wanted to enjoy the view from atop of the Fortress of Narzod while playing on the Vectrex console, but Doomgrabbers, Tarantulas, and Ghouls had other ideas. Even more, there was the Mystic Hurler who waited at the fortress, which made this trip a little more perilous compared to your average drive in the countryside. Snowflake's journey ended short of the fortress with a respectable 11,370 points for fifth place, although he vowed to return to try again.
This covers our Scoreboard Spotlight for this week. As a reminder, these were just a few of exceptional records that were adjudicated and accepted recently. Every record that made it through verification and landed on our leaderboards has a well-deserved place in the Twin Galaxies gaming pantheon.
Keep scoring high, finishing fast, and game on!
