A gamer from the arcade Golden Age hits the slopes once again to unlock the meaning of skiing

Since 1981, Twin Galaxies has been proudly celebrating video game player achievements. So there's something extra special when someone returns to competitve gaming decades after making their mark when TG still operated out of a storefront arcade at 226 East Main Street in Ottumwa, Iowa. And the icing on the cake? We get to share the news with you in this week's installment of the Scoreboard Spotlight! But that's not all – we also have four other achievements from a host of amazing submissions to share, so read on!

Martin Pátra – Racoon World (Arcade) – Points

During a weekend of high score battles at the ArcadeHry located in the Czech Republic, Martin Pátra emerged as the top raccoon on the 1998 release Raccoon World. During his run, Martin completed 12 levels of danger-filled action filled with cute baddies and bonus items for a final tally of 2,583,000 points to seal the deal with a first place finish.

Jacob Lipke  –  Mario Bros (Nintendo Game & Watch) – Game A - Points

Jacob Lipke wasn't done with the Nintendo Game & Watch as he returned with a superb run on the 1983 release Mario Bros. Unlike the arcade game, this version had Jacob steering Mario and Luigi on opposite sides of the screen as they passed items back and forth to load into a waiting truck. Following some double-point action, Jacob topped out with a hard-won 483 points.

John Brissie – Snokie (Atari 130 XE) – Points

John Brissie went full retro with a danger-filled quest on the quirky 1983 release Snokie for the Atari 130XE computer. Don't let the innocent-looking hills and crevices fool you – they're a sno-bird graveyard but John kept plugging away and blazed an icy path to 8,580 points for second place on theTG leaderboard.

Intellivisiondude – Shark! Shark! 2  (Intellivision) – 9 Minute Game - Points

In a tale of the little yellow fish that could, Intellivisiondude slayed an army of big bad sharks while avoiding an assortment of other underwater baddies on Shark! Shark! 2 for the Intellivion, finishing the 9 Minute Challenge with a fearless 106,650 points.

Eric Olofson  – Apline Ski (Arcade) – Tournament Settings – Points

In November 1982, Eric Olofson became an original TG champion on the arcade title Alpine Ski with a high score of 500,774 points performed at the Earth Station arcade. Forty years later, Eric returned to the slopes in a bid to answer a decades-old question: did the game settings used by the arcade owner in 1982 match up with the TG settings used for competition today? Acquiring his own original cabinet, Eric went to work remastering the game. After several months and 45 attempts later, Eric concluded that his 500k score was attained on different settings. But in doing so, Eric served up a big “first”  – the world's first fully-recorded “no crash” arcade run of 265,614 points. A big congratulations to Eric for his achievement and for coming together to explore these historical questions with openness and positivity!

This covers our Scoreboard Spotlight for this week. As a reminder, these were just a few of exceptional records that were adjudicated and accepted recently. Every record that made it through verification and landed on our leaderboards has a well-deserved place in the Twin Galaxies gaming pantheon.

Keep scoring high, finishing fast, and game on!
