Legendary 'heavy' shotgun announced for Fortnite Battle Royale

The Backbreaker shotgun from Save The World is making its way to Fortnite Battle Royale, sporting 'increased range'.

Fortnite Battle Royale has always had two shotgun variants; pump and tactical. With the former sporting higher damage in exchange for a slower fire rate and smaller magazine, players used to abuse the damage by having two pump shotguns and switching between them to fire much quicker, a technique known as the ‘double pump’. Epic Games have since fixed the exploit, but the pump shotgun still sports an impressive range and infuriating one-hit-kill potential if all shells connect with the head from close range, leading many to believe the gun is still overpowered and unfair.

So it’s somewhat surprising that In a pop-up on the home screen for Fortnite Battle Royale, a new shotgun has been revealed. Simply called the ‘Heavy Shotgun’ for now, it will have increased range compared to the existing shotguns and seems to be similar to the Backbreaker shotgun from Save The World.

Common sense would imply that Epic surely won’t have three shotguns in the game at once, so either the pump or the tactical will go into the vault, just like the submachine gun and smoke grenades recently. The reaction on Reddit to the reveal has left many players bewildered and judging the gun before they’ve had a chance to use it, and while we’re tempted to do the same, we’ll reserve our comments before we see it in action. It seems likely that it’ll either be overpowered, as shotguns are known for their immense damage, or too situational for people to use instead of a rifle or hand cannon. You can see the Backbreaker version of the gun in action in Save The World below.

With new modes and features added all the time, we’re still anticipating the release of the jetpack that was revealed a few months ago, then pulled back into development due to a bug close to release and instead we got the sub-par hunting rifle. Could the heavy shotgun be used as more of a building destroyer from close range than a weapon to deal damage, like the minigun?

This news comes shortly after Epic teased the first season of competitive play and the first celebrity pro-am game.
