Pac-Man: Perfect through 8 [PPMDC]
A full perfect score on Pac-Man sounds daunting. But what's not nearly as daunting is simply getting perfect through the first eight boards! All winners of this bounty will be featured in a future piece at perfectpacman.com.
A full perfect score on Pac-Man sounds daunting. But what's not nearly as daunting is simply getting perfect through the first eight boards! (I know because I recently did it.)
At the risk of being pedantic, "perfect through the first eight boards" means eating every ghost once off each power pellet, and eating each fruit. (The power pellets themselves and the little dots are also requisite, but you can't advance without eating them all anyway.) On perfect pace, your score after each board should be as follows:
Board 1 - 14,800
Board 2 - 30,000
Board 3 - 45,600
Board 4 - 61,200
Board 5 - 77,200
Board 6 - 93,200
Board 7 - 109,800
Board 8 - 126,400
An example of this achieved on MAME can be seen here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1628387785
Players are encouraged to employ their preferred approach (i.e., freehand techniques, continuous motion patterns, or a combination of both). I recommend Neil Chapman's fantastic Pac-Man patterns, which can be found here: https://nrchapman.com/pacman/
More guidance on getting perfect through eight boards can be found here: https://perfectpacman.com/2022/11/13/quest-for-perfect-score-1/
IMPORTANT - A Pac-Man death is considered disqualifying for this run. You must get to 126,400 on your first life. Given this, you may play at whatever default/bonus life settings you wish.
Both original arcade and WolfMAME are acceptable platforms. In fact, any platform earnestly approximating original arcade Pac-Man is acceptable. (So Namco Museum should be okay, but "Pac-Man" for NES or Atari 2600 are not.) Bottom line is that, whatever platform you use, a perfect score through eight boards must be 126,400. If you are unsure about a specific Pac-Man platform, just ask! Note that continuous motion patterns designed for original Pac-Man may not work for all such re-releases, even if the game appears to be otherwise identical.
Other PPMDC bounty rules:
- All performances must be fully recorded, and must adhere to general TGSAP rules and community expectations, including those particular to the platform and emulation being used.
- The date (or approximate date) of this achievement must be stated. It is requested, but not required, that submissions for this bounty be achieved on or after the date this bounty is posted. No proof is required for date of achievement, and submitted runs for this bounty will not be disqualified on that basis. (In other words, it's safe to vote on submissions that lack proof of date but appear otherwise genuine.) However, submitting old runs, or misrepresenting dates, may disqualify the submitter from recognition for future PPMDC bounties.
- No major glitches aside from any specified in the bounty description. Specific to this bounty: Ghost pass-throughs are allowed.
- Swag strats are encouraged, and will be featured in the eventual write-up.
For global PPMDC bounty rules, see the PPMDC bounty page.
In April 2023, perfectpacman.com will post a write-up featuring the results of the first round of PPMDC bounties hosted at TG. Everyone who submits any run consisting of deathless play with 126,400 points through the first eight boards will be featured. Winners will also be given the opportunity to have their comments about this challenge or any other appropriate gaming-related topic published.
Top billing will be given to the player with the fastest completion time, as measured from the moment Pac-Man first begins moving on the cherry board to the moment the score of 126,400 is reached. Note that since the April 2023 write-up will cover multiple bounties, "top billing" will refer to the results for this particular bounty, and not necessarily the top of the whole page.
