Green Beret / Rush 'N Attack...To Attack the Max Out or not? Counter-stop or HAN-Stop?

I've been giving this a lot of thought while practicing Green Beret lately - It's always in the back of my head...Should I go for it?

I don't think I've ever attempted something so challenging as a counterstop on a game of this difficulty. While I still enjoy the game, full runs are going 40-45 minutes and I'm usually getting to stage 11 (3rd stage of loop 3). I've done save-state practice at some trouble areas in that level, but when I actually get there in a real run, it never goes as planned.

I may be losing focus after playing for that long, as I've not ever had to keep my focus at 100% that long for most games I play. I tend to go for 20-30 minute beat 'em-ups, platformers or shmups that usually stop after 1 or 2 loops.

I predict that a counterstop will take at least an hour to an hour 15 minutes to do, at least at the rate I currently score at.

There is another option, though: The early (level 1) padding taken to its extreme, I could see myself getting close to 300k before even leaving the first level! I'm not sure I want to achieve the maxout in that way, but all's fair in scoring, right? I could max the game out almost by the end of the 2nd loop if I played at a slow-ish pace after the first stage.

I do have a secondary goal, though - I'd like to see the end of the 3rd loop. In save state practice, level 11 (stage 3 of loop 3) is where the difficulty maxes out. Practicing the beginning
of the game starting at loop 4, I passed the first 2 stages (stage 13 & 14) the first time I saw them - just getting there is my problem. :)

Just my random thoughts, thanks for reading everyone. Happy gaming!

- Pete

It can be very disheartening to end a game after point pressing early on. It de-motivates you to try for a second run right afterwards. Atleast that's my experience.

With this in mind you have to ask yourself the question: "Do you really want to put in the time or do you just like the idea of maxing it out?"

Not pressing early on and getting the maxout by the end of loop 2 sounds like the way to go as clearing the 3rd loop sounds VERY hard.

    best of luck

    Go for it!

That is the same thing I was working on... maxing out each stage, but as you know I still have not perfected even the third stage of the first level/loop.
While I have gotten further on a first man than the third stage, that fourth one was where I finally lost interest.
Then I didn't record and started using the save states for stage 4, but then found my earlier stages were getting rusty, so I went back to recording straight though on each attempt without using save states for practice.
I threw that level 3 score up on the boards knowing is has already been beaten by other runs on the first life board, but still have not finished stage 4 on the first man with a score I am happy with. (I usually die in stage 4 when trying to max out points) :P

Can't image maxing out the levels after the first loop much less the later ones, but I also thought I would never get 50k on the 1st stage on the first man when I first started out on this title.
I just want to get at the top of the boards for the first life challenge, then work on my overall high, so maxing out as I go seems to be the best idea.
However, as you guys already know, this title takes a serious time investment from anyone attempting any kind of max out.
I think anyone could easily devote a whole year to it, even if it was your title of focus leaving other titles for only short runs to break the monotony. (Donkey Kong Level 1-1 challenge)

I actually have played this title so much for weeks on end that I was having dreams about it. (no joke)

    WOW WTF

I just saw your 355,760 for the first life challenge and thought ...man, how did I miss that?
Then I looked at the dates...you posted it on April 1st, and it was approved on April 5th!!!!
No wonder there weren't any comments on it yet.

I still wonder about the adjudication process, when I see posts that have hundreds of views with dozens of accept comments linger for over a month, then other posts with less than half the views and no comments are approved in a week.

Not suggesting any foul play here, just saying that a lot of people are bound to have suspicions when they see that type of inconsistency in the adjudication process.

Congrats on your 1st place for the 1st life challenge.

I wish a first place score would be given as much time as others to be adjudicated though, so everyone can have a chance to participate in the adjudication.
I know that is out of our control.... just saying.

Haha, yeah...I was kind of dumbfounded that all of my previous first life submission and highest point submissions are still not approved, but that one went through so quickly with only 80 views!

I know it's impossible to tell how many of the 80 views actually voted, but there is a huge inconsistency here. My first Green Beret submission after I started practicing again I posted March 8th has more views (119 as I type this) and is still not approved.

And thank you for the props, that first life challenge I might be done with unless someone beats the score. I was hoping to get through the 2nd loop on 1 man but it's just not happening for me right now.
