Hori Real Arcade Pro VX SA Kai Joystick Modding

I was inspired to get an old joystick in better shape today after @Max stopped by the arcade today with his joystick.

Here are some before shots:

I was hoping to replace all the buttons and sanwa joystick, as the stick had become less responsive over the years.

I opened the stick, it was super easy - just 5 screws on the back. After opening it, here is what I saw:

The buttons and joystick I was going to put in are pictured on the bottom.

After removing the old buttons and joystick:

New stick and buttons installed from the inside:

And finally...done!

Thanks to paradisearcadeshop.com for getting me the new parts super quick, I recommend them for any arcade parts you might need.

I hooked it up to the PC and everything worked great right away...
Looks pretty nice for a stick I bought for myself during the X-mas holiday break in 2012!

Looks real good in black on black, Pete.

Are those Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons? Anything will feel way better than the stock Hori buttons. I think those have a ***** feel to the touch, like it's build by thinner plastic or something?

I like the black on black, too - thanks!

The HRAP Kai actually came stock with sanwa buttons...they were just getting grimey and slightly unresponsive; the new ones are the sanwa obsf-30's, you're correct on that. The stick was getting sluggish to my inputs compared to my other joysticks, as well. Feels great now!

I might attempt a more involved modification on another stick soon...stay tuned.

Looks great, Pete! I like the blacked out look.

Suggestion: keep the buttons and just give them a good cleaning. Even if you toss the microswitches, you can always get replacement switches. I'm sure you know, it's always good to have spares around. The stick can be serviced, with a simple disassembly, cleaning all the parts with isopropyl alcohol, and a bit of shin etsu or other lubricant when putting it back together. I did this on the sanwa's that have been my Capcom big blue for 10+ years....in my ever dusty man cave. They were getting more "resistive" as time went on. After servicing them, they are back to new. I've also had the microswitches in the buttons in said cab start failing one at a time (replaced 3 of 12 now, in the past 6 months). Got the replacement switches from focusattack.com, equally as good as paradise, imho.

Looking forward to the next mod! :)
