I just found out that apparently back in March highscore.com went away along with all of its information.

The domain seems to have been sold, and now there is a game streaming service being offered there.

Probably old news to most of you but I was saddened to hear. The struggle is real.

I submitted a lot to there just to build my online presence. It was a mess of a system though. No accountability for submissions or votes. There’s a place for that I suppose but it appears that variety of system is unsustainable.

lvlupscore.com has more effectively filled this void

I hadn't heard about this earlier myself as I don't regularly visit highscore dot com. I'm not sure what prompted the change, but the owner of the site sold the domain to the highest bidder. I wasn't able to confirm the sale price but you can read more about it here (note: the site domaingang provides both parody and non-parody content - this article was highlighted as non-parody)

I can't find the name of the former owner of highscore dot com but he does own an X account and goes by the name @seriousatari. For a brief time (circa 2015) he also had a website at seriousatari dot com that was his personal video game related page with some cross-content posted to highscore

it was replaced by lvlupscore.com, they did a good job of importing the highscore DB over to there. I also believe it is new people running lvlupscore so it is better maintained.

At LvlUpScore, we have a robust accountability system, but the standards are much more lenient (read: "lower") than TG - unless your score is top 3, you don't even need video evidence -- just a photo will suffice. While like HighScore and TG, the approval process is crowdsourced, submissions take a mere handful of votes, and each vote has the same weight, as we have no reputation system, and many functions of LvlUpScore relies exclusively on heavy moderation. While TG is, IMHO, the go-to for official WRs, LvlUpScore is designed for the more casual player. Also, unlike TG, removals of previously approved scores are executed by fiat. At HighScore, it was like pulling teeth to get a blatantly fake score off the leaderboards. At TG, the dispute process is deliberate and thorough. LvlUpScore members are encouraged to submit their scores at TG as well.
