twin galaxies had the most rigorous impeccable standards ever if you beat a ref. if you beat a ref they'd verify, reverify and check for anything that might even indicate something that might indicate something else that might indicate that was some loose affiliation with something improper.
so i would say any score that beat a ref had to be legit, fake (and real) scores that beat refs just didnt have much chance of standing for long which is why pacman was removed

Speaking of Pac Man, it is 'way past time for you to release the Mullet Muppet's footage of "the first 'perfect' game", Mr Hall. As long as you persist in keeping it secret, Twin Galaxies' credibility shall continue to decline. Prove that the legal confrontation between TG and the MAMEr of the Century isn't just another "kok doc". Release the footage.

Ya, but this particular list is from the VERY old days, I guess when you could just "say".

Unquestionably, Ref politics came in later, but this may predate even that?

    (Not insisting, just suggesting).

What you said makes sense tho, I can see that going down exactly as you described.

Crazy to me, all the scores from NC/TN/VA. I literally live where all three touch, is a "tri-state" thing, and in the grand scheme those are essentially "local" scores, evidently this was a hotbed for activity.

thats true roger, which is why the 8 million was accepted, back then at least the standards were equally low for everyone.

It might prove controversial, but I think there would be merit in releasing the footage. I know, let sleeping dogs lie and all that, but that whole thing feels a bit unresolved. In the same way TG posted the full video of the DK scores in its custody, I think there would be a great historical interest in the community to see what was actually recorded since it was a video tape submission review. At very least, maybe we need a "Post-Dispute Simon Leitch - Arcade - Pac-Man" thread in the general forum to include additional info.

Returning to the subject of how many scores still stand, it's great to see so many scores on several titles have been pushed higher and higher since the publication of the list, demonstrating continued interest in classic arcade competition and the existence of a community to support it. Cosmic Avenger is another title with a long-standing WR (I think from 1982) that isn't on the list (but on the scoreboard) that I'm planning to start playing for. The game is most well-known due to the ColecoVision, but the arcade is also a lot of fun.

You mean because of the lack of video evidence? Most of us playing these game were not cheaters, despite some high-profile examples that came to light in the last couple of years for the simple reason that the vast majority of gamers believed that there was no pride to be had attaching your initials to a fake score. When it came to posting high scores on magazine lists, the strategy wasn't normally to post a "realistic" high score, but to go for 3,000,000 on DK, or 8,000,000 on Pac-Man.

I just took one of the highest scores on the list - 40,000,000 on Asteroids - just surpassed last year by John P McAllister, a record that stood since 1982. Now if the argument is that someone faked a super-high score BITD that someone today with superior skill was finally able to beat, well, I can't say for certain, but given how far future gamers have pushed many of the scores higher, I'd wager that there was some good honest competition going on, too.

cheaters tend to pick high scores not low scores, so while i imagine most average scores were real and most players honest, since cheaters disproportionatly gravitate to high scores, i think the high scores will have more cheaters

to your example of a possible score now beaten, theres history to tron. Tron was believed impossible since it wasnt humanly possible with the tactic of top players -- the human forearm muscles give outpoint pressing spiders. once it was realized running boards was better, it was realized beating that score was possible, even still the score was still highly doubted and eventually removed.

    .
Wrong on both counts. Top Tron players used to use a two handed way of holding the joystick, for rapid fire, which I learned in the early '80s. Effective grid bug hunting yields the best scoring rate, as proven by my YT video. Anyone who doesn't know this stuff has no claim to knowing about Tron.

Thank you dread for showing some tron players to this day still use inferior tactics.

You’ll note you’ll never get the world record that way

As always, you open your mouth, without knowing anything. My Tron tactics are superior, as acknowledged by David Cruz, the arcade record holder. I am the MAME record holder.

And you don't even know what "that way" is. You've never seen it done. You know nothing about Tron.

dude dont get me wrong, 2.7 million is good, i remember when i first got that. but you'll never get that removed score point pressing that way, theres a reason the top players dont do it. running boards is both a better rate, as well as allows for more endurance.

you're the ONLY mame score on that track, which again, its a fine score, it shows you know the basics, but for you to claim your method is so superior when its 1/4 of the score i'm saying cant be done point pressing is a weak argument

look i wasnt trying to crap on your score, i wouldnt never insulted in in adjudication, but you brought it up to claim i'm wrong on both counts, when i'm quite corect.

but you tell me, if i'm so wrong, why was the score removed? i'd like to hear your version of history, then maybe if i think its laughable enough i'll search and dig up the old threads proving my statement on why it was removed is very much correct

LOL. Top spot on a track with zero competition? You also have the lowest score recorded. I don't think superior means what you think it means.

If you're point pressing, your tactics are inferior. I can put up 2.7 mil in my sleep.
