Dream Arcades currently has less than 30 of the monitors left in stock and once that&rsquo;s gone, they&rsquo;ll no longer be able to perfectly replicate the experience of arcade games like <em>Donkey Kong</em> or <em>Pac-Man</em>as they were originally intended.</p><p>From the <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2017/03/03/what-the-death-of-the-crt-display-technology-means-for-classic-arcade-machines/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">report</a>:</p><blockquote><p>Winding together a CRT tube with its electron gun (the two major components in a CRT) requires a delicate touch. It&rsquo;s a two-part, by-hand procedure that begins with the laborer painting the inside of the tube as it spins on a centrifuge. The worker must use a dipstick-like brush to coat the depths of the monitor with a conductive substance. Then he must merge the glass of the bulb and the electron gun under a flame that burns at 400 degrees celsius. Any debris or dust that gets into the unit at that point will shorten the display&rsquo;s life expectancy...</p><p>&ldquo;I have a feeling that &mdash; y&rsquo;know how there are those guys doing pinball repair on the side &mdash; there will probably be some guy you can send your monitor to and have him rewind the bulb,&rdquo; says Ware. &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s going to be really expensive.&rdquo; A CRT tube is very heavy, so shipping costs alone would be costly. &ldquo;Right now, I don&rsquo;t know of anyone who does [the winding].&rdquo;</p></blockquote><p>The future of new machines or restorations that don&rsquo;t cost a fortune will be to just suck it up and use LCD screens. For purists, that will mean accepting a less responsive refresh rate and other factors like occasional <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing" rel="noopener" target="_blank">screen tearing</a>.</p><p>While some well-funded collectors will likely find a way to restore the old systems, the best bet for an average Joe looking for a perfect Galaga experience will likely be visiting museums that undertake preservation efforts.</p><figure><source data-srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--d_cHlwLp--/c_fit,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--W5XYQtAl--/c_fit,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--LTk0ZDF---/c_fit,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x" media="(max-width: 599px)" sizes="760px" srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--d_cHlwLp--/c_fit,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--W5XYQtAl--/c_fit,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--LTk0ZDF---/c_fit,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x"><source media="(max-width: 1487px)" data-srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ujjdQbST--/c_scale,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--zotBStGc--/c_scale,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x" sizes="760px" srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ujjdQbST--/c_scale,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--zotBStGc--/c_scale,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x"><source data-srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ujjdQbST--/c_scale,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--zotBStGc--/c_scale,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x" sizes="760px" srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ujjdQbST--/c_scale,dpr_2.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--zotBStGc--/c_scale,dpr_3.0,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x"><img src="/images/wall/23963/94ecd9e99c3b079da10bffcc9396131e41c296c5.jpg" data-srcset="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 2x, https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--VeFnuK1a--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz.jpg 3x" data-chomp-id="rmlxhosdik4garxxtsgz" alt="Exhibition at the Computer Game Museum (Computerspielemuseum) in Berlin, Germany. He told me that even professionally restored machines were lacking:</p><blockquote><p>We were able to redo everything; rebuild monitors and replace lots of parts that were faltering. So we were able to undo some [previous efforts] and bring them back up to more original standards.</p></blockquote>

To bad your rules for The Fast and Furious tracks have to be original cabs. No repairs allowed or the run is DQed

its a real concern, but i think this doomsday is overstating things. between repair, care, and the fact that crt's do last pretty long on their own and i dont think arcades are going extinct anytime soon.

also, yes, you can swap in LCDs, though alot of us dont really like that.

I believe some people have even learned how to modify TV CRTs to run as arcade monitors, with space invaders in particular i beleive its supposed to be especially easy so it does depend on the game somewhat

now, though i dont think they're about to disappear, yes, rarity is a factor. absolutely preserve those CRTs while you can

Im going to eventually put an LCD in my donkey kong machine. When this CRT finally dies off, I really dont have the patience to fix it again. Installing the cap kit and hot cap was a pain in the ass.

You can buy brand new chassis to connect to TV CRT's to use in arcade machines.

I've got 10 19 inch TVs in storage for some future projects and incase my originals crap out beyond repair.

The tubes are pretty much indestructible, as someone said, usually a cap kit will always fix them.
