If I buy this, can I use it for submitting scores?

I have a ton of Atari 2600 games and nothing reliable to play them on. Instead of searching for a good system to play them and start competing again, can I get one of these Retron 77's and still submit scores?? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I figured it was worth asking before I submitted a score. Is this a grey area?? I'm kinda new here and my searches among the forums have yielded some mixed feelings. Anyone? Bueller??

I cannot find the wall post, mebbe someone could help me out-
Someone mentioned this recently, and mentioned that it ran on "Stella", which is the accepted format for emulation submissions at Twin Galaxies.
I said in the thread that there was the possibility I could be convinced to go with it for emulation submissions, but would need someone with more technical knowledge of the equipment to break that ice as to whether or not it was an "honest" representation of the system(important).

    So I say "possibly".

I'm guessing this wall post will probably be the catalyst to consensus-on stuff like this, it's usually community decision, the system works really well and open.

    *Edit*
As unusual as this may seem, even with real carts, it would still likely be only open to "EMU" support, as the system itself is emulated, tho the games are real.

I can’t possinly imagine people accepting this under ntsc. Emu would be a debate but you’d have my vote

Ya, I def. had to throw the "edit" in there-funny, the thought of subbing scores from original carts to EMU, but it actually validates the idea of roms, IMO.

Irony-using a real cart on this to sub an emu score, and using a Harmony to sub a hardware score.
2018 is where it's at, Man.
I always thought "Heaven" was 1985(...I actually watched Field of Dreams last night, all the way through, lol!), but...
    We've got it all.

"CLONE" tracks are an option too. I dunno about EMU - Stella seems to be a pretty clear standard there.

Agrees roger it sounds counter intuitive when you say it like that but emu is about the hardware not the game itself.

ben makes a point about a clone. It would be a no brainer to acceot if this was submitted to a clone track for sure but I think it could also go on emu if it’s true this uses Stella. Look I don’t pretend to know more technical issues than I do I’m just regurgitating what I heard about this using Stella emulation. If that’s true then the simple fact the the computer runs an emulator and nothing else doesn’t make it no longer an emulator

As a completely personal side note I know it’s illogical but yeah I develop a sentimental attachment to my carts. Even a clone that clearly had issues I’d get more pleasure out of playing my real games on a bad clone than perfect roms on everdrive on a real system. Just really get attached to my carts.

@stygian wanted a close-up sometime-I know it's nowhere NEAR your collection, but I still feel pretty new to collecting. It started AFTER my involvement with TG, I swear, tho I had plenty of games over the years.

I value being able to experience games via flash, but-there are two more shelves just like this one all side-by-side. If I were a better businessman/trader, they would be full of games too, not(as many)spiders.
    :)

(I'm waay off-topic now, lol, but I'm just not sure where/how to carry on conversations here, no forums and all. Didn't use them when they were here, see the need now that they are gone.)

retron77 runs/uses Stella. Would count as Emulated as it uses the same emulator people use on there.

i find atari games never really had the surge other systems did. theres a few titles of course that are rare and expenisve. but commons and uncommons alike seem to all hover around $1-$2. go to flea markets, second hard stores. an atari collection is pretty cheap to build. and i dont just mean cheap like buying all sports games on the nes. i mean good games on atari are cheap too

Wow! Thanks for the feedback everyone! Glad I raised this question.

Not sure who said this up above, but yes, its 2018 and substitutes for everything exist and allow us to enjoy things once again. Who would have thought?

Maybe i'll record a score using it and submit and see what the community has to say about it. I'm gonna buy one either way but if emulation category is acceptable then why not? Ive had two 2600's bite the dust, this will last me longer, especially considering im introducing this stuff to my kids.

Interesting topic. Goes back to my Flash Cart question. There are just so many different ways to play these games that it's a challenge to know what should be considered a legit score. Good to know our community is filled with experts who are into finding these things out though.

Haha don't let me fool you, I hate emulation and dislike everdrive crap.

Original or bust. Good luck on finding out what works!

But if the game is coming from an original cart, then is it really emulation? More like half-emulation. Thats like what came first? The system or the rom?? LOL. Goodnight everyone....leave me something to read when I get to work in the morning!
  17. Snowflake's Avatar
Yes because you’re not emulating the game you’re emulating the Atari itself. The system emulates how an Atari would play that cart
