Story Time

On December 15th, I woke up at 4am and headed out into the early morning air to make the 3.5 hour drive from Murfreesboro, TN to Corbin, KY. My mission: to pick up the Donkey Kong cabinet I had recently purchased.

I had been worried that it would not fit inside my Prius. The night before, i went to my frequent arcade where they had an empty nintendo cabinet. We loaded it into the car without a problem. All my measurements were correct and I was more confident that I could fit the real DK cabinet inside without a problem. All of this trouble just to save some money on renting a van or truck.

The trip was nice and I only stopped once for coffee. I was feeling very excited not only to finally bring home my cabinet but to finally meet the collector I had been in contact with for the last 3 months.

When the GPS gave me the warning that my destination is .5 miles away, something terrible happened.

A car came flying around a corner and hit me head on. I was less than 1/2 a mile from my destination. This man was driving way too fast and was fishtailing like a maniac. He hit me, the guard rail, and another car. If he had not hit me, he would have flown over the rail and died.

I walked away without a scratch. My car was ruined. Or should I say, my wifes car. The man I was supposed to meet was on his way and actually saw the wreck. He called to say he was going to be late because of a wreck and I told him "if its near your place, thats me in the blue car!"

The driver that hit me was taken to the hospital. My car was towed and I was left sitting there alone in a small town having a small freak out on what to do. Luckily, Mike (the collector) came to the rescue. He called his friend who manages a car rental place and he offered to rent me a car to help me get back. When got some lunch and I managed to calm down from the experience. I really wasn't sure what to do but Mike said he would so whatever to help. We got a SUV size vehicle and he took me to his warehouse and we loaded the cabinet into the back.

We shook hands and I was on my way back to TN. The LONGEST drive I have ever experienced. I was still in shock about what happened. I drove home in silence. I was happy I had the cabinet but I was more worried about what I was going to tell my wife. Yes, I did nothing wrong, i wasn't at fault, im lucky to be alive, but it was her car i crashed. (she took it just fine).

I finally arrived home......

The kids have been enjoying the new addition.

So, thats my epic tale of how I acquired my Donkey Kong cabinet. Having one in the house and playing everyday has been the best. My game has gone up and im ready to hit that million point goal!

Final conclusion: next time, I'll throw down the money to rent a van.....

Had you not taken the Prius, would the other guy still be alive? Something to think about for sure. Thanks for the story but mostly glad to hear everyone is ok. Oh yeah, it's nice to have the DK find a good home too.

crashes suck for alot of obvious reasons, but when you're on a trip and far from your friends who can help you definitely all the scarier. looks like you're not forgetting that one

not even close the same to me, but i remember getting my baby pacman in emergency snow conditions. but it was all or nothing, winding roads with no rail near a river, could easily die. either die, or stay on course with zero damage, so yeah i came out of it with no damage like you but it was scary for sure moment by moment. i checked the news later, and while i was out, 3 other people in the same area did in fact die, so my nervousness was not an exageration

the silver lining, is it adds character and sentiment to your machine.

Good thought! I have also thought that if I had not stopped for coffee and to use the bathroom, I would not have been there and he would have gone over the guard rail. He actually reached out to me to say sorry, he's a 65 year old man who just made some bad driving decisions.

he insurance part of the this tale has been the true nightmare. Nothing gets done when its the week before xmas.

Man don't get caught up in all the what ifs..... What if you had not stopped for coffee and had gotten in a worse accident somewhere else and had become seriously injured yourself..... Endless possibilities

oh insurance. ug. thats why i finally got full coverage. even with minimum coverage, their insurance is supposed to cover you if its their fault. that happened to me too. got hit other guys fault. talked with their insurance. everything seemed good. never got a check and i didnt know how to file a lawsuit, so they got away with it.

if you have full coverage though, your insurance covers you, then they do have the lawyers to have the others guys insurance reimburse

it sucks. i'd rather have minimum insurance, but since the other guys insurance company doesnt like to pay you really need full. i learned my lesson

its even suckier when you both have the same insurance company! Either way they are paying. There was property damage when he hit the gaurd rail, and thats been the hold up. I managed to get the ball rolling and everything got taken care AFTER new years. I finally managed to convince them to pay to have it towed back to tn so i wouldn't have to drive back there to pick it up. Full coverage doesn't always guarantee speedy coverage. im over all it now.

So glad that you walked away. I can imagine that drive back would have been extremely tough. Shout out to Mike for helping out and getting you in shape to head home. I hope you're able to appreciate the new DK more and more without being reminded of the accident. It's very cool you can share the game with your kids - it was a big bonus for me to share in the same way.

    Amazing, Man, good stuff!

Definitely glad to hear everyone OK, and all good in the end.

If it was up to @timmell , you would have been heavily rear-ended, AFTER you picked up the cabinet.

    :)

No, seriously, glad all is copastetic!
