For a very long time in the UK it was considered very bad form to defame a competitor, so it was quite rare for any advert to compare products. Not surprising the yanks did it, though. :P

There was also a very big thing to get a contract to supply the schools & often became the life blood of a computer. As a kid back then, any computer with educational support was generally hated because it meant the price was too high to be purchased for home use and so the experience was very different from the likes of home machines. Add to that, no one wanted the computer range from school because the software titles available were edu-crap - influenced by the contract, not the commercial appeal of the system. Made for misrable computer lessons (which were rare due to the high cost of the systems!).
