Attention Video Pinball lovers: Williams making a comeback

One companies failure, is another companies gain. Well done, Zen Studios!

( I think they will be very aggressive with new licensed tables as well)

Thanks for posting Marc. It very well could have been a bidding war. :D Regardless of what happened, I'm sure Zen will do a good job with the license.

first table should be Gorgar. Otherwise it is crap.

Given how bad the feel and the physics are on their other tables, I'm not holding out a lot of hope. The videos I saw of the beta sure didn't look like the physics were very realistic.

My garbage system can only handle low demand mame games and email. haha. Game play is crazy choppy, but I'm sure it's my system and not the programming or steam. I saw a @timmell score posted though. Perhaps he can let us know how it plays?

As per your link (or maybe another link I saw later), they'll end up being full releases so I'll wait for release on PS4.

Yeah... 5 minute TPA games sound great!

Too bad for TPA too. Losing those license to Zen has to be a big blow for them.

I'm curious, why can't Zen and TPA both have the license? I mean, TPA plays different than FX3 so...why not just let both have make their own tables and make bank along the way? Let gamers decide which platform they like to play the table on and Willaim's gets paid twice. Or am I just dreaming of a perfect world that couldn't possibly exist in real life?

Perhaps at least one of the parties involved insists on an exclusive license. Maybe Zen had the money to pay enough to convince whomever owns the Williama licenses?

After observing all the events that folded, this is what I believe as well. It was all about the $, as the rest was conversation.

Regardless of Farsight having the Williams lic. rights, going all the way back to the PS2 - PHOF days, they just could not continue to secure it in present day. (At least they warned the gamers ahead of time)

I have absolutely no bias, nor favoritism to either company. I love them both. However, Zen Studios will have a lot of work to do, to make these Ballys/Williams tables top notch, once off Beta mode. Plus, the universe for them is very open for new ones: Eg. Indiana Jones/Star Wars Episode 1. (They already have the rights to Disney) Meanwhile, Farsight can focus on Stern. (Whoa Nellie, and Big Buck Hunter will be coming out soon)

I say it is a positive win-win situation for the fans!

Everything makes more sense now. :D

    Hi!

We managed to implement a lot of new tweaks and adjustments into the Williams Pinball Steam Open Beta, based on the excellent feedback we received from the community.

    What's in the update?

    - Flipper bounciness reduced
    - Table lights got some work, should have a very light-bulb feel now
    - Outro/attract mode skip - you now are able to skip the end dotmatrix animation
    - Tilt warning revamp - Now the first bump will not result in a danger. Has a 6-second cooldown though, so if you nudge frequently it will give the warning
    - Ball physics tweaks
    - Flipper physics tweak
You are now able to do small movements and flicks with the flippers
You are now able to live catch with the flippers
Post-pass far more reliable with less power
    Backhand-ability improved

Please have a look and let us know if anything needs further work.

    Thanks!

Actually I really don’t like the five minutes because once you get rolling it’s over . I was hoping and I don’t know if this is possible on pinball Fx. Tournament pinball three balls only is the rules I would like to make. what you guys think I don’t even know if it’s possible €€‹€‹€‹€‹€‹€‹

Actually I’d be all down about one ball, vs 5min.

3 balls would be nice as described in the past as it would most closely match up with tournament rules. The thing is, these two leading virtual pinball companies don't program for that. Rules are easy enough to create for this.

5 mins is nice in that it's short, but mostly favorable in that it's currently being programmed for by one of these two companies. TPA has 10 minute game play (better than 5 minutes imo) but it's only available for their tournaments, not as a user option.

1 ball is ok I guess, but sort of has the same issue as a 5 min game that you mentioned. Rules would be pretty easy to setup on this.

I was ready to move forward with setting up 3 ball rules the last time this came up, but did not see enough player interest for any change at all at the time. There was a bit of interest in the discussion, but that doesn't fill a leaderboard that is already sparse as is.

IMO, at least with 1 ball, there still is no limit on how far someone can take the game and be flawless. The flawless makes it exciting that the gamer makes no mistakes for a hopefully long time. You can drain 2- 3 times in a 5min game and it might work to your advantage, in special situations. (to setup another shot or something faster, example) Cause 5 min now, feels like a speed run instead of point run.

For example. @redelf could beat his Asteroids (Marathon) record on rule set of TG for Extreme settings (1 Life). But there is no way he could beat that score with a limit of 15mins.

  20. Max's Avatar

Yeah I agree with the speedrun analogy. Fire up some tracks if you want and we could always see if interest exists. I'll chip in SP and I'm sure others would too.

My only concern would be that TPA and Zen already have tons of tracks as is on most every format that they have been released on. Some might consider more tracks (3 ball or 1 ball) dilution. But hey, life is short. Make them if you want them and let me know if you need SP support. I'll play on the TPA tracks and the very few Zen games I own if tracks are created. But please... don't add eating chicken wings while playing as part of the ruleset. ;)

Who knows, maybe one ball games will generate more general pinball interest at TG. That would be a great thing.
