Vectrex Controllers

All of the Vectrex tracks that I looked at, have the requirement,

An ORIGINAL Vectrex controller MUST be used for all submissions.

Why is this? All other consoles allow third party controllers as long they don't have dissimilar features to the original controller.

If I create a new Vectrex track for a game not currently in the database, do I need to include the above language??

sadly the best person to answer your quesiton is @rage but he is one of the people who TG doesnt allow to be tagged. i believe he mentioned before he created the rule but i really dont remember why.

if you create a new track standard defaults exist, well by default, but you can overrule them. if you dont say anything about controllers, the standard rule will apply, your'e free of course to explicilty state originals only if you want. however, if you want to allow any controllers, a single line allowing that explciitly will overrule any implied rules

No, not if you don't want to. In fact, you could choose to create a track that specifically requires not using the original controller.

It's been a long standing thing with the Vectrex-the original controllers are just not as "good" as aftermarket controllers, and all of the TG scores are based on using original controllers.

RaGe is MIA, but regardless of anyone else's opinion, if he were still around, he would advocate original controllers on Vectrex, I feel 100% confident in that, and he was the one that created the Vectrex tracks, I just think he's a trusted source, and he's been clear to me in the past on the issue of Vec controllers.

As others have said, create a track that doesn't require original controllers. We could also discuss as a community the merits of changing the "original controller" rule, but for now, create a track that explicitly permits third party controllers that are aligned with the originals (eg. no use of auto-fire, etc). I'd be happy to contribute towards such a track as well.

OK, I got a text voice message from Rage(which was AWESOME, BTW!).

I'm sure he'll be back around soon, but I do definitely want to clarify my own opinion/thoughts.

On existing tracks, the rules need to stand firm-the Vectrex controller has a slower firing rate than any of the modified controllers, one of the reasons our Vec scores aren't as high as other sites.

He made the rulesets himself specifically to address this, and every score on them has adhered to this policy, any scores using a modified controller just wouldn't be on the same playing field.

If someone wanted to start tracks on existing games that allowed mod controllers to be used-shoot, go ahead.

    New tracks/Homebrews?

    Do whatever you want!

But for the scores that are there, the "Vectrex controller only" rule just has to stay in place, otherwise the integrity of the allowed competition over the years is shot in the ass.

Is unfortunate. I'm playing a new Vec game soon, I only have real Vec controllers, and I'm afraid I'm likely to destroy one with this new game.

Still not telling what it is tho.
