@OOO After reading back through the above rules, I noticed there is no reference to picking your virus speed. both Mame and Arcade allow the player to choose Norm or Hard on the level select screen. Hard allows a player to get more points per virus killed, but at the expense of the game going faster. Did you want to allow players to choose their own starting speed here, or limit it to one or the other?

Hi Patrick, we are playing the MAME marathon track at TG. The rules at TG state clearly for this track to use "Drop Speed Up: Medium", which is the setting to be used for Game 4, as shown in the screen shot I posted in this game thread. I looked at the Arcade track before posting this game, and those rules allow you to pick any speed you like. So the rules at TG for Arcade and MAME are different in this way.

    TG MAME marathon rules:

    ROMSet: DrMario

Drop Rate Increase After: 7 Pills

    Virus Level: 1

    Drop Speed Up: Medium

    Free Play: Off

Special Rules: You may freely choose your Starting Level and Music.

Starting Level is assumed to be only for the virus starting level, and not the ability to start at any speed you like. So medium/norm is the speed to be used when you press the player 1 button.

right, the drop speed and the virus speed are different though. the DIPS determines how fast the viruses fall and how fast they increase their speed, but have no effect on the score. If you insert your credit and press start it takes you to the virus select screen. on that screen there is the option between norm and high. The MAME rules do not specify that you can select either, but you have to select one. And since the arcade does allow the selection of either MAME likely allows it as well, but the rule being left out was an oversight (especially since at least one of the performances was done on high).

In any case, the screen shot below is what I'm referring to under speed:

Thanks for the screenshot, yes that is what I am referring to. When I read the MAME TG marathon rules, I interpret it as you must play at Norm speed in your example. In the rules, Starting Level is assumed to be only for the virus starting level, and not the ability to start at any speed you like. So medium/norm is the speed to be used when you press the player 1 button. For the MGL, the decision is made you CAN choose either NORM or HIGH.

Patrick, please have a look at the MAME tournament track. There it clearly states you must play at Fastest. I do not read the rules as saying you can pick any speed you want. So why have two TG tracks stating different speeds, unless they were intended to be at different speeds? Normally on any TG track, the difficulty is set, and not optional. But there are exceptions.

For example, in the TG MAME tournament track, calling for High, I am quite sure if you play the game at Norm, it will not be accepted, since it was played at the wrong (easier) setting. As you said, the speed has no effect on the score. Note the 1st place replay shows Fastest in the dips and Hard in the menu, as both are selected correctly.

but if I'm understanding you correctly, then you believe Marathon must be played in Norm, but it was not. If you look down the thread, Barthax posted a screen shot of the high score screen, and high is next to the final score (showing that high was used). That player used high speed in both settings.

"As you said, the speed has no effect on the score." - The drop speed up DIP does not effect the score, but the speed selected on the level screen can have an enormous effect on the score.

I have little doubt that some of the scores in marathon use norm and some use high. I suspect it is the same for tournament.

I'm fine with Norm being used for this tournament, it is why I asked, so this could get clarified earlier on. however, I'll need to remove my score from last night as it was done on high speed. I'll get something resubmitted in the next day or two

I am glad you checked this out thoroughly. Thanks for the Barthax screenshot. Based on your feedback and what I have now triple checked, I have now decided that norm or high can be selected for this game, based on the evidence. I will add this to the MGL rules. Your score is therefore OK.

    Game on ...

I appreciate this discussion. I'd never looked closely at the MAME rules before, but definitely makes me realize TG needs to update the ruleset in someway to be more clear. I'll bring it up with them

for whats its worth i've been in a few threads where a simliar theme comes up though i know nothing of this one in particular. historically on arcade (and we recently learned historically the same was true for intellivsion and atari) you could play on harder than required setting but not easier. i dont know if the same global rules from arcade applied to mame but its not hard to imagine they might have

I remember when this thing came out 30 years ago and Nintendo making such huge deal out of it; I rented it once and wasn’t interested in it whatsoever; maybe 30 years is all I need to get into this game ;)
