I owe a thanks to @redelf and @stygian even though they may not realize it. I was peaking out at around 150k. Basically the fireballs eventually become so fast, that by the time you see them theres no time to respond so if you're in the wrong place you're just plain screwed and no amount of skilll can save you. the bad luck really sucks. so i watched @redel**s submission. @stygian made a comment about fireball patterns. the "patterns" are a combination of random and predictable, i'll go into more detail at some point later, but learning that helped a lot. stygian didnt specify what the pattern was, but simply knowing one existed motivated me to find it. after learning that, there were just a few additional tweaks i needed fully leverage that knowledge. the game is definitely marathonable.
to expand on the random/predictable nature of the fireballs when they speed up:
first, before fireballs reach higher speeds they are completely random, so if you're noticing what i'm saying doesnt hold up, its because you're still on an earlier level. Once the fireballs do become super fast though heres how it works.
The first 5 fireballs on the level are random. after that, whatever the first five were, they repeat for the rest of the level. So, for the first 5, dont worry about making it to the top to get enemies, just try to get in a relatively safe spot, i like the ledge of the second lowest platform since that allows me to quickly drop down if the fire ball is on my level, and just keep track of where the first 5 fireballs come from. Once you know where all five are you can plan the rest of your gameplay. Obviously if theres one level (height definition of level, floor i guess is the better term) where there are no fireballs hang out there. Thats the super easy scenario. In general you want to hang out on the 2nd to top floor. This allows you to hit enemies as soon as possible. As long as there's only one fireball on that floor its not that hard to anticipate when its coming, jump up when it does, and go back to work the rest of the level. two fireballs on floor 2 are one of the tougher scenarios, but i personally still prefer dealing with 2 fireballs on that floor than 1 fireball on any other. 3 fireballs on floor 2 are brutal, the beauty is though, when that happens there's only 2 other fireballs to go around, so you either have one completely level to wait on, or the fireballs are spread between the bottom two in which case i hang out at the very bottom so that i just have to hit enemies from the bottom and then grab them on the second bottom only ever worry about 1 fireball at a time. if there are 4 or more fireballs on floor 2, awesome, it means one of the bottom two floors is bereft of fireballs and you have a relatively easy area. Clearly, my personal favorite is no fireballs on the second to top floor, this is rare, but when it happens, yay, it doesnt get an easier than that.
as a side note, i noticed the game flips levels at lvl100, or level 0 depending on your point of view. level 0/100 is a bonus level so thats nice. also the fact it cycles on the 100th level makes me think we dont have to worry about any sort of lvl250 bug and the game really is marathonable.
on a personal note this game means ALOT to me. I will be keeping this record whatever it takes. If i need an excuse to bump this thread i'll fill in the story of how if not for atari mario bros i'd probably be doing all my competing on street fighter 2 and not even touching the old consoles here.
Accepted Congratulation William
