The mystery game is...
Challenger is an arcade-platformer video game developed and published by Hudson Soft in 1985 for the Nintendo Famicom. The game features four unique levels, or "scenes", in which the player must navigate to rescue Princess Maria from the villain Don Waldorado. Also included are sixteen distinct difficulty levels. When the game is beaten, it loops and increases the difficulty.
Challenger was featured as one of the first episodes of famous Japanese video game reality show GameCenter CX. In this TV show, the host, Shinya Arino, is forced to play and beat the hardest video games ever developed.
Before today, Challenger was untracked in the Twin Galaxies database. That has now changed. The track follows the same rules for the game in the tournament. If you do not have a flash cartridge, you can compete on the game by playing it on Retro Uprising here. Be sure to play using SCORE MODE so your score can actually be submitted, timestamped, and verified.
REMINDER: After today, registration for the competition will be CLOSED. If you haven't signed up already, be sure to do so before it's too late!

I never thanked you for founding that NES Challenger track - Thanks! 2016 holds an Everdrive purchase for me, so sometime this year I'll be able to make an official TG run at this title!
