Robocop. A bit inconsistant here at the moment
I just bought a machine with a Robocop board installed (mainly for the horizontal monitor).
I used to be able to finish the game at my local arcade back in the day without knowing about the tricks to send your score into the stratosphere. Now I find that on MAME those tricks are banned (rightly so) and the record is about what we used to score back in the day:
Robocop [World Revision 4] [Click to see information about this game.]
Variation: Points
Platform: M.A.M.E.
Rules: ROMSet: Robocop
Unused: Off [Both]
Flip screen: Off
Cabinet: Upright
Player Energy: Medium [20 Notches]
Difficulty: Normal
Allow Continue: No
Bonus Stage Energy: High
Brink Time: Normal
Special Rules: You are not allowed to use the 3rd level [or other levels] point cheat in this game. Any use will result in your score being immediately disqualified. [This involves sitting in a particular spot and the points skyrocket]
High score 734,200
yet on the arcade track the settings are:
RoboCop [Click to see information about this game.]
Variation: Points
Platform: Arcade
Rules: Dip Switch #1:
1-4 = OFF
5 = OFF/UNUSED
6-7 = OFF
8 = ON/OFF [Upright/Cocktail]
Dip Switch #2:
1-6 = OFF
7-8 = OFF/UNUSED
Note: The above Dip Switches, are not only the FACTORY DEFAULT settings, but are also the correct Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings for this title;
Player's Energy: Medium
Game Difficulty: Normal
Special Rules: Continues are NOT permitted!
Which while the difficulty settings are the same the banned techniques from MAME must have been used.
Top score: 2,240,600.
Just pointing out an inconsistancy. You can't score that high by playing it straight through.
Cheers
Rob
Re: Robocop. A bit inconsistant here at the moment
My guess, and I'm going out on a limb to say this here... would be to challenge the existing score. But the big question is whether or not those rules existed before or after the top submission that you say is not possible and would be another ball game.
In any case, this is assuming that you know for a fact that a score like that is not possible otherwise. I've seen many games I knew like the back of my hand and would cry foul at some of the scores, only to find that my own knowledge wasn't what I thought it was. I assume if you're buying the arcade you probably know a lot about the game and aren't just guessing though.
Unfortunately I'm not the right person to address the issue you bring up, obviously. But just wanted to throw some food for thought out there.
Re: Robocop. A bit inconsistant here at the moment
Just at the moment I'm just pointing out that the while the MAME track bans certain tactics the arcade track still allows these tricks to be used. I'm a bit rusty at the moment and need to practice the last level a bit more to get back to where I need to be before challenging this score.
For the record there are places in the game where it's possible to score points by either punching or shooting (only with the cobra cannon) objects offscreen. If you're punching an object offscreen behind you you'll score 200-400 points per punch depending on if it's one box or two that you're punching. However in two spots that I can think of (there's more that I can't remember off the top of my head) it's possible to fire the cobra cannon and hit multiple objects offscreen which makes the score counter advance at a rapid rate until you move forward and bring those objects onto the screen. The top of the elevator in level three is the most well known place to do this. Check out the MARP highscores on any of the Robocop romsets. All of them have highscores of 9-10 Million.
There just aren't enough points available in the game to allow a score of above 1 million. For an average completion score of just over 700K, 200K of that comes from completing the game. 100K for finishing stage 8 plus a 100K completion bonus. Two million plus would have to have used the trick, probably only on level three. Legal at the time (and still legal now on arcade for that matter) but if I submitted a score using the techniques required to beat 2 million I'm 95% sure it would be rejected.

Re: Robocop. A bit inconsistant here at the moment
Thing to remember about MARP is that the standards are extremely relaxed compared to TG and you'll usually (but not always) see higher MARP scores across the board. Having said that;
I've dealt with some cross platform inconsistencies on the same game. For example, on Metal Slug for the Wii I'm told that autofire is optional, but with MAME the FAQ says that autofire is never allowed under any circumstance. I asked a ref about this and he mentioned that there were several exceptions to the rule MS being one of them. So, I know what to do but only because a ref got with me 1 on 1 to explain it.
What I would say is this; if the score in question seems too high for the platform, then it's likely that the rules are relaxed. You could try a submission doing what you can to earn points if it's not obviously a general violation (as opposed to a no-no for that specific game). Unfortunately I'm not a ref so can't say so unequivocally, just throwing out how I'd approach it until I got a solid answer.

Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii is very different than the Metal Slug games on MAME. Using the default option in a console game menu is not the same as using MAME cheats or turbo-controllers with an arcade rom.
Sorry, that has nothing to do with

I'm told autofire is accepted on MS for MAME.

Well then it is. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't, I hadn't checked that.

I take that back. I've checked now. Autofire in not allowed for MS on MAME.

Rob,
You can punch the wooden crates when they're just off screen for 200-400pts. Cobra cannon not required.
Can't remember how many extra points you can get per game as I always used the score accelerator thingy :-)

Re: Robocop. A bit inconsistant here at the moment
I was referring to the Wii version and nothing else. Never did I imply or state MAME at any point.
But this discussion is for another place, as this is for Robocop and not MS.
