Re: PacMan noob :? .... fast play or slow ?
If your game seems fast, but it's not turbo speed (where pac-man moves very fast relative to the ghosts). Then the difficulty jumper may be connected on your pcb. It makes it skip some early boards, reaching apple speeds by the third screen. One simple way to verify this is by running an apple pattern on the third screen.
OK, now you owe me a poker tip. :)

Actually, an easier way is to just watch the attract mode. If Inky pops out of the pen immediately, then the hard difficulty jumper is connected. On the normal setting, he bounces up and down awhile in the pen before exiting. Now hopefully you don't have one of the aftermarket ROM upgrades that changes the patterns  There's a way to tell in attract mode for that too, but it's a bit more complicated.

How about an Uno tip?
Keep in mind that there may still be some alternate versions of both difficulties of Pac-Man (reg speed) out there; I played one of them ("Manhattan Chip") at a local laundry from 2002 until 2005 (when it was converted inside to a speedy Ms. Pac)...even did the "John Birkner 9th-Key pattern" without a hitch to about 400K-500K...though it has to be done tightly, and (very important) you have to go through/around Clyde once each board...done correctly on this version, you shouldn't lose any lives.
Here are the differences for all 4 attract modes, as I recall:
Difficulty 1 (Easier): Pac-Man eats energizers on Lower Right, Upper Left, and Lower Left and is caught (by Inky I presume) in the Lower Left quad of the screen.
Difficulty 2 (Harder): Pac eats energizers LL, UR, and UL, then is caught by Clyde in the LL quad of the screen.
Alternate Difficulty 3 "Atlantic City Chip" (same blue times as #2): Pac eats no energizer and is caught by Inky in the LR quad of the screen.
Alternate Difficulty 4 "Manhattan Chip" (same blue times as #1): The only attract (mode of the four) where Pac eats the cherry, and I believe is caught by Pinky shortly afterwards.
I am not sure if the alternate conversions were legal, as Namco Museum 50th Anniversary didn't include them, just the first two. (Are those the after-market ROMs you refer to, Fred?)
I will tell you also that I successfully got to the split-screen on a Difficulty 2 version of Pac-Man once in 2008 (20+ years after my 7th & last conquer, so far, on Difficulty #1 in 1988); it's actually the same number of boards to complete on both official versions. It doesn't "skip" any boards, it just "eliminates" the equivalent of about 3 boards' worth of energizers (with four 6-second energizers apiece) and makes using the 9th Key patterns necessary starting with the 4th Key, effectively also "eliminating" 2 other boards (equivalent to 7th and 8th Key) where you would have used the Apple-to-8th-Key patterns in conjunction with a 5th Key pattern (which would be used on 2nd Key in Difficulty 2).
In other words, what Difficulty #2 (and #3 to a lesser extent) does is eliminate the equivalent of the Cherry, First Orange, Second Apple, 7th Key, and 8th Key boards; moves the equivalent of every other board speed & energizers to start earlier; and tacks 5 more Key boards (where Pac-Man moves only 2/3 as fast as the monsters and the energizers only reverse the monsters' directions) onto the "end" of the game.
There are also two different attract modes for Super Pac-Man. More on that later.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. I don't think they were legal either, but I still see an occasional Pac-Man machine with one in it. In addition to regular patterns not working, you can tell if you have one of these in the game by watching Inky and Clyde. Starting on the peach level, they both bounce up and down a couple times before exiting the pen, whereas on a standard Pac-Man board, they'd leave immediately together. I was always bummed when I saw that on a machine back in the day ;)

The "Ken Uston P4" pattern worked quite well on both alternate versions (if executed tightly) from Apple-to-8th-Key or Orange-to-3rd-Key. The real problem was trying to figure out patterns for the early boards (if there were any). :x
Did anyone notice the reference to Pac-Man during MeTV's Airin' of the Green...Hornet the eve of the 17th? Svengoolie hosted the 4-hour marathon of that show (of which I have 2 hours on tape including the Pac-reference in question).

Re: PacMan noob :? .... fast play or slow ?
Wow guy's..... Lots of info. Really awesome.
Dave 88.... I appreciate the link. What kinda poker do you play? ( tourneys , cash , MTTs ) I would love to give you some info. Anything you don't understand or want to know more about ?
VGMC..... Uno tip..... Thats really easy. When someone lays down a red 5 and you have a red card. It is wise to lay that red card down....but first placing 1 to 2 cards under your red card ( cards under the red card decrease with the age of your opponent ). If your playing ringers under the age of 7.. two cards will be sufficient. Anything else may just be to risky. Thanks for the info . I will see what I can find out. I know when I get to the 9th key I cant use the 9th key pattern that is used for a typical "normal" or "turbo" game. Which I'm suppose to be using on the 4th key and on, it has never worked. Pinky is always there to kill me by the time i am coming up to eat the key. When I start my game Blinky is out of the pen and Pinky is bursting out of the pen.
And congrats on the split screen . That is very sick.
Sorry for being such a noob dudes. But is attract mode not when Pacman is playing itself? Or what is the best way to do such.....again sorry for the noobness. My machine does not show screen of pacman playing itself
Also shot in the dark...anyone on PSN ? I would love to easily show someone this **** ? Via PSN chat.

Which 9th key pattern are you trying to use?
Give "Stacked" a try, it's easy to follow (this can be a problem with a lot of 9th key patterns imo, it's easy to space out for a sec and miss a turn), it's pretty fast. I also find it more entertaining than most.

Yes, attract mode. Just watch for where Pac-Man dies in the attract mode. If your machine does not display attract mode, it may be set for free play? If so, you should adjust the dip switches to "1 coin 1 credit" When in free play mode Pac-Man displays a static screen which can cause burn in if left on a lot. Plus it's cooler to have the demo anyway.

I was mostly joking, I've got thousands of hours of live exp. Mostly limit holdem, some spread, and tournys. I'm actually a modest winning player. I don't know if I'd say I crush it, but I do all right. Here, I'll give myself a tip. Don't keep playing when you're stuck, trying to get even, tired, and not playing well. Now if I can only follow my own advice :)
I am open to some random tip though.
Re: PacMan noob :? .... fast play or slow ?
I have a tip: limping/completing from SB is usually a leak:)
Re: PacMan noob :? .... fast play or slow ?
Dave.... nice video man. that's not the pattern I was running, so i'm pretty stoked.
And yes my machine has been on freeplay for the last 2 months I didnt even think about it.
And idk about your tip. Depending on the player(s) it may be wise ( if your not tilted) to play through your losses. I was online 2 nights ago playing just .10/.25 HU. Lost 3 buyins ( 75) to the guy, but he was so terrible. I ended up 265 cashout.
so sometimes its profitable, but it can be a mistake if your not in the right mindset. def never play tired. You online ? Lock Poker is paying out American players and they are running some AMAZING GTDs and MTTS.
Yea the most important tip is one I can never seem to follow. Bankroll Management.
The most trouble you'll ever get into is from the blinds.
Here's the best advice I can give anyone about poker . The 3rd bullet is the most powerful. All my money is made from leaking morons, fish, or people who cant call when all three streets have been fired and the texture of the board is somewhat decent to exploit.
Where you play Dave ?
You should get on Lock. I do some stake horsing/ team play.
Thanks again everyone. Much appreciation and Much respect.
