It'll be a sad day when "self respecting gamer[s]" are a minority in the CAG scene, but I'm guessing that wasn't the point you wanted to make. Obviously without some sort of Gallup-type poll, it's going to be anecdotal, but ultimately yeah, majority/minority isn't always the focus is it? It's not like a majority of the world's population cares about score chasing, but that doesn't preclude a community coming together and enjoying those pursuits. Or to take it a step closer to home, I bet a majority of gamers would expect that next time you're over at Mitchell's house, chillin' and flipping through Guinness, that it would be kind of cool to cue up those tapes for each of the games that put him "on the map" - the 3 DK scores (1,047,200, 1,050,200, 1,062,800), and his Perfect Pac-Man score - so he could give you a play-by-play, point out the close calls, reminisce, etc. But if we're to believe what's been said in public, he (allegedly) can't show you or anyone a *single frame* of video from any of those career-defining games -- all four! -- even though they were videotaped at his direction. But maybe the majority doesn't matter in this case, you know? And at least you can talk about the Guinness spread again and look at those cool framed certificates instead.

They already are the minority. The CAG scene is full of self hatred.

as someone with a life centered around video games, its tough for me to put this perfectly into words but i regularly talk about how people make to big a deal about scores.

sure games are my life, but i dont expect fame or fortune from it or really anyone else to care at all. thats the real line. when it goes beyond how you spend your time and instead becomes your status symbol. heck, i think its fine for it to be your reason for living even, its a lot of fun and can even have some real world benefits as you transfer and practice the analytical skills needed. but theres a difference between spending all your time on a game, even identifying as someone who plays that game, and attaching your self worth to the score. again, wording is hard, i'm proud of my scores too but i hope i'm getting across what i mean. i spend my life on games cause i love games, but its not particularly what i want my friends to know me for. sure sure they know i'm the game guy always playing and pretty good at it, but its not why we're friends. we're friends cause we like getting drunk and watching wandavision, thats what i want my social status to be -- a cool guy to get drunk and watch wandavision with

evener makes a good point about needing a poll. i have no idea what % actually has this problem. but i have noticed most of the loud people (not all, most) do seem to somehow think getting a score will bring them riches and glory (exagerationi for the above point thats hard to put into words) and that is gonna lead to self hate and misery, its also gonna lead to lawsuits and threats of lawsuits everytime that reason for living is questioned.

One thing I learned from this hobby is that you could have the “First Perfect game” of Donkey Kong, recognition from all over the world, interviews in Japan, own hundreds of Bitcoin, and still be a self hating loser who can’t take their focus off people they weirdly obsess over. Some people just can’t make time to watch WandaVision, and be better people. Too busy hating themselves.

LMAO!! The minority is anyone who is a billy mitchell fanboy. Why didn't guinness adjudicate your donkey kong scores? Why didn't speedrun.com renew their license with guinness? And why is anyone out here posting about billy mitchell on twin galaxies and expecting sunshine and rainbows? I don't know.

Idk about classic arcade gaming, but the video game community in general does have a ton of bugmen who seem to center their entire self worth around things like their video game collection, or in this case video game high scores.

Dont get me wrong, I do see this somewhat differently from Snowflake, I think glory should abound for these accomplishments, more so than it does now, but someone shouldn't put all of their self worth into said accomplishment, and certainly not their worldly possessions.

see though reddawn, you give bounties, you give credit and rewards to others, you dont walk around expecting/demanding it be given to you. we discussed this before, and i do want to emphasizemy wording isnt at all perfect, so its possible we may be even closer in agreement than i'm making it sound.

I think we are forgetting the most important factor here.
Donkey Kong is craaaapola. Tough, but boring.
Most players are wannabees, or caught up in the KOK frenzy. It made me play DK for a day. Sucked. Mega.
It wasn't fun, in any way. I had to play something else to reset my game mind.
It seems to be almost a pattern, but without the other top players, Hank, Andrew, Vincent, Jeff, Steve, etc, who are gents and have never put a foot out of place in my experience, ever, I would have put DK down as a nasty piece of devilish work, which turns dudes into douches. Maybe it only gets to some...?
    Being driven mad by a game X grandiosity / defeat = ?? G=DK(to the power of 99, cubed) :)
DK is like too much alcohol. You either sing, or smash the place up ! :D

Ok, I'm only having a joke here.
DK is incredibly hard. "Furniture and TV smashing" HARD.
Anyone who can get 800,000 or more, or even can score more than my pathetic short term attempt, has my references.
The top guys, I doff my McLaren baseball cap, to. The pain you must have suffered, sleepless nights, clutching that picture of Billy ( :D ), or the skill you learned, leaves SCARS that may never heal.
Funny that the biggest DK cheat is still in photos with real champs. Feels like NASA camp. Or Congress. Or the arcade Kung-Fu Master record. ;)
I was, and still am a wannabee in many departments. I failed more than I won. I liked KOK. Waiting for the KOBJ, heh...
As for gamer of the century, I liked all that stuff. It was inspiring to see my hobby displayed nicely. Every story needs a champion or victim or both. 70's/80's gamer of the century should have both an Invaders and Defender score for that medal to be real metal. (IMO) Billy's scores ARE registered achievements. Maybe not all, though.
Remember Robbie, I watched you play on Twitch, and said you will be the next champ. Piff-paff-poof, you became. Not sure why, but there was a slickness which made me smile. I can see the future !

To be a bad ass in my 'hood, you had to be good at Defender. I wish I could play Defender. Still has the best sound effects. Only saw one Robotron machine in my whole life.
Not a big Nintendo fan, but arcade DK, seems to be the only tough "sensible" game they made. Everything else is aimed at the young, it seems. Too many bananas and stars.
DKF turned that game into a science. Awesome to see. If all games had that, it would be a new world.
Remember this. Every single time I played Donkey Kong...
It felt like my credit was being stolen. (On MAME, of course) Even though free, I still felt cheated !
Building bridges with humour and ever so slight envy with a tad of non personal ridicule and empathy for your blinkered plights.
    We've all been there...
Relationship ending practice. Record beat? "Finally, we can go to bed, now?". No champagne for us.
    They're just jealous, really...

Did they not recognize your DK achievement Robbie? I kinda figured they would. Its a real shame if they didnt, in my mind its pretty much the most coveted record in all of competitive gaming.

I assumed that the image you posted about Mitchell's Guinness appearance was from your own book, but I guess it's not? Because your score is indeed cited on the opposite page, albeit the score from 2020. I see that the section that features your score and Mitchell is called "eSports and Streaming":

Guinness gamer edition is not a great archive of any games. It's mostly nonsense, from my own experiences alone.
We all want to be in there, right? I did.
So, late 2016, two people posted 6 pictures between them , showing their printed scores in the 2017 edition.
    I was in those 6 photos 3 times !! :)
BUT, they were pathetic scores on pathetic games, NOT world records in an way. One was for a game beginning with Z, can't remember what game it was, that's how insignificant it is. They just needed a "Z" to fill the chart.
I told my (now ex) missus "I'm in the Guinness book of records three times or more!!!!"
She said: "That's nice babe HAVE YOU DONE THE WASHING UP???" No comma !
    No champagne for us... :D
Guinness has become a complete joke.
Do something with one sock half on, new record.

My wife is in Guinness. TG and I sent them some photos of mine. They selected 5 to be included in the book. It is always a treat to go to somebody's house, chat it up a bit with their kids. Sometimes they have the book and I open it and I say "Look. Those are my photos". and the kids are like "Whaaaaaaa???"

I knew they were putting Billy back in this years book, but I just found out a couple days ago that I was mentioned, so that was nice to see.

We all know video game scores in Guinness will have its flaws. A few years back, they put in some biased scorekeeper who runs the DKFantasyLand scoreboard for a 1-1 score that wasn’t even close to the WR. People like that love to lie and manipulate the internet to get their way, so it doesn’t surprise me, and Guinness suffers because of this kind of reckless deception.

People whined and played victim when I did that. It was actually a factor in the biased decision to reject my score.

Why was your score rejected? Just by DKF?

Yeah, they’re biased against me, and couldn’t admit publicly that I was the best player with the highest score. Hurts their little feelings. They said that I dropped the voltage, which doesn’t do anything, but the fact that I think it gave me an advantage is why they rejected it. If I had said, “Hey guys, I’m gonna play on my DK with low voltage, and I don’t think it does anything” then that would have been fine.
