Tourney System thoughts

Obviously, I'm interested-I love active competition, I love kicking butt, and I love seeing someone kick my butt, I've proven that over time.

I dunno about being able to exclude people from tournaments.

Jace, I'd mow your lawn for free, lol(you'd have to pick me up, I'd need a ride...), but I don't agree with the "facebook" mentality-especially with the equality talk going on, I just can't imagine why there would be the option to uninclude(?)someone, other than simply not liking them or being afraid they will stink up the tournament-I don't have many levels, but I think when it's broken down like that, exclusion seems unfair.

I wonder about the sponsor of the tournament not being allowed to participate, as that could lead to some serious stink-fests, but no one would bother to sponsor unless it was a game they wanted to play and enjoyed, so that's a thinker, really, I dunno. People know who they are up against here, so with voluntary participation it's prolly ok.

There also may be room for "TG Tracked" tourneys, and "for fun" tourneys.

I love that people get to play flashbacks and experience older games they may not have the ability to get real hardware for, but comparing the gameplay is apples and oranges, the "official" scores just can't be properly approximated-EMU Dragster is "sorta" like hardware Dragster, Flashback Dragster isn't even close(trust me).

Looking forward to the experience-unless someone starts a Mario Kart tourney I'm not likely to participate anytime very soon, but glad this feature has been added, it should do a lot for active participation here!!!

I don't know whether I agree or disagree with you(Probably both, heh) so I will go ahead and start off with how i believe the system can manage this problem in the most effective way.

    1. Make a 2-tiered system that you described earlier.Have the first be for fun and the second be TG tracked and sponsored.

    2. If the tournament is for fun, then anything goes. Tournament admins have complete control over who is and who is not allowed and at what points they are no longer welcome. Not only do I think that its fair for the fun tournament to operate this way, I believe it to be highly necessary. Let's say I have a couple of friends IRL that I would like to host a tournament for. I might prefer that only those friends are allowed to participate. If everyone had to be involved with the tournament, then I would not be able to have this option. (As far as I'm aware, and @Jace Hall correct me if I'm wrong, but according to the information provided in the link below, friendly tournaments are the only thing that the system is currently set up to create. Should this be the case, this would absolve anyone that has created a tournament up unto this point of any alleged transgressions.)

    3. For the serious tier, I would love to see everyone be able to join in a competition that actually had any sort of weight within the TG community. This would allow fair play for all of our members and put us in such a position that no one is left out in anyway that is unwarranted. With that being said, there does need to be a way to review players that are either caught cheating or that prove to be creating a toxic environment within the tournament. I would recommend a feature that would allow the tournament leaders to effectively communicate and potential wrongdoing so that they site admins would be able to deal with such issues accordingly. As much as I have enjoyed my time on this site, it has only taken me a very short amount of time to find a few members that have no other goal than to create a toxic environment on this website, so I feel that it is of upmost importance that there is something in place to weed any undesirables out of a given tournament.

So with that wall of text out of the way, this is what I believe to be the most efficient solution to the current problem that we have. I am interested in what others might have to say.

    TL;DR

    1. 2 Tier tourney system

    2. 1st stage fun tourney, tourney admins can control at their leisure with little to no oversight from TG

2.2nd stage serious tourney, tourney admins must abide by guidelines to operate tourney, stronger oversight from TG

Edit to above post: Instead of "fun" and "serious", I believe that the terms "private" and "public" would be more suitable.

If I want to create a tourny that is only for the top 10% of players I should be able to. If I want to create a tourny for just my friends I should be able to. If I am creating a tourny with a prize there are legalities there that may require me to only allow people over a certain age or of certain nationalities. I'm confused why people are freaking out about this.

Both of you have made very good points, and have caused me to rethink my position-Madsandy's process sounds pretty close to right, and your reasonings for "x players only" are solid as well.

Any distinction that a tournament will or will not have will be related to the Tournament creator/admin desire to specify whatever the value/distinction is for participation.

It is a tournament tool. Nothing more. If someone wanted to host an instant tournament and offer a prize pool of $1 Million dollars, they could if they wanted to. That would be a tournament that some would feel has a distinction. Some people might not care or consider that distinctive.

The tournament creator is the entity that is defining the nature of their tournament.

If TWIN GALAXIES itself decides to create/admin a specific tournament, then the distinctive characteristics of that specific tournament would be dictated by TWIN GALAXIES.

I think some of the confusion that exists is the false idea that all the tournaments that members are making using the tournament tool are somehow officially TWIN GALAXIES endorsed, They are not.

The tournament system is just a handy tool for members to use to hold tournaments of whatever kind they would like to foster competition and fun among friends or other members interested in finding competition.

We will be implementing a way for the results of tournaments to be displayed on user profiles in an organized way so that all tournament participation of any kind can be reflected there for reference.

I understand a bit better now, the comments here really helped.

It's seems to be something that will intentionally encourage active, daily participation between competitors in essentially "real time", so I'm all for that.

Jace, two (2) minor points on these tourneys.

1st - At present there happens to be two (2) active tourneys that share an identical tournament name...might be a good idea to mandate that all tourneys have a unique tournament name as it might make life easier down the line for archival and search purposes.

2nd - I think each tourney should have a brief one-line, maybe even just 40-60 characters, description visible in the "Explore Tournaments" area, and barring that, the ability to search for tourneys based on platform(s) being contested.
