If You Had to Create a List of Classic Arcade Accomplishments that All Players Should Strive for

(Note: this was originally posted to General Forum but I was asked to consider switching to a Wall Post)

Hello fellow gamers:

I wanted to open this up for debate...if there was a short-list for absolute-musts...achievements that truly show off the "chops" of a well-rounded arcade player...just what would they be ? Think of this as kind of a "to do" list for the average and expert gamer alike.

It's too easy to say a million on this title and on that title and so forth, so here are the few that I would like to add to such a list.

Also, I am leaving off games that originated in the home console environment such as "Super Mario Brothers", "Dr Mario", "VS Goonies" and "VS Castlevania" and the like. I also decided to leave off the entirety of the "Golden Tee Golf", "Dance Dance Revolution" series' as well as fighting game titles ("Street Fighter", "Mortal Kombat", "Killer Instinct", "Primal Rage", etc) for my own reasons.

Thoughts ?

In no particular order (though at some point I will alphabetize these)...and I'll add a few more as I think of them...

Reaching stage #256 is a 'holy grail achievement' for any decent Tron player.

Also, stop putting game names within quotation marks. It's both hideous and incorrect.

OK, thought of a few more.

Get into Elevator Action's tenth building. You won't get very far into it, so we'll call that a holy grail.

There are two fighting games I've finished, without taking a hit: Golden Axe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Those were "perfect" games, and playing like that again is definitely a holy grail.

You have Complete Road Blasters on 1 credit Average. I'd pay money to see someone do that. Find a video or INP of that please. And What's this bonus stage you speak of on Road Blasters for Holy Grail Achievements?

Arcade games weren't relevant to me until I got to college:

Get Gold Medal on all events on 720 Degrees.

Complete Double Dragon without a single use of the elbow.

    Count me as below average...

Seem like there should be a Sinistar achievement in there... the game is a quarter muncher.

original mr do -- avg level complete first 10 levels, mastery would be marathon
mr do's castle -- same as above
dig dug -- avg max out flowers, mastery kill screen

zaxxon -- defeat "zaxxon" (enemy named 'zaxxon')

carnival -- complete one round at maximum difficulty

    turbo -- see all scenes

popeye -- complete first 7 levels

mario bros needs one, but not sure what it should be

RTM REPLY - thanks, I got it backwards...it's "S.T.U.N. Runner" with the bonus track, I have to reverse the placements.

RTM REPLY - I agree, just couldn't think of anything. Same for "Robotron", "Joust" and "Joust 2" which are all popular titles.

peak difficulty -- whever that may be, is always a good goal

RTM REPLY - lots of great ideas here, some comments...

Mr Do - for "marathonable" titles I debated on what to add for these, and some I left off for lack of thinking of something meaningful...this is why I left off thus far "Robotron" and "Joust", for example. Merely "marathoning" a game means automatic inclusion I suppose, but then I would have to greatly expand the list to include dozens of other titles and I just wanted to be a bit selective otherwise "Armor Attack" would be here, "Battlezone" and so many more

Mr Do's Castle - this one I like as it is a dang tough title...I'd just like to understand better about the first ten levels...is it a complete loop, or just simply ten levels not unlike "Robotron" stage 10, "Defender" stage 10, etc.

Dig Dug - I left in the "kill screen" at expert level as this is just so difficult to pull off. For some titles I left as expert only without an "average" comparative challenge, I think this was one of those

Zaxxon - I like this one...going to ad to "Average" set next, with "Super Zaxxon" added to "Expert" challenges

Carnival - I left in stage 5 due to the dynamics of the stage and how the game loops every 4 levels at that point. 5 is the hardest followed by 9, 13, etc

Turbo - I actually forgot about this title...before I add, how exactly does a gamer know that they completed all scenes ? I'd like the challenge to be more definitive in terms of description before I add

Popeye - another iconic title, but same question as with Mr Do's Castle...does level 7 achieve max difficulty ?

Mario Brothers - another great title that I could not think of something appropriate to add, much like "Sinistar"

    Thansk.

mr do's castle the first loop shows all level layouts, however the monsters are harder the second pass. and in fact the third pass they're harder yet again! i made it to the 4th loop and it still gets harder, i think though it peaks on the 5th loop so i never made it to peak difficulty

    ThanksRTM thanked this post
  14. Snowflake's Avatar

turbo i do not know how to tell when the scenes repeat so someone would have to figure out where you finally see them all.

popeye only has 3 basic levels that go
1,2,3,1,3,2,3,1,2,3,1,3,2,3 so not quite like donkey kong where the beginning stage is always between the other stages but close. it also gets a little more difficult for a while but i think it peaks fairly soon. i fail like the first 7 levels definitey show you what the game has to offer heck one could argue the first 3 levels completes the game

RTM REPLY - one last question, then...you indicated "complete first 10 levels"...is it a known that the game maxes out at level 10 ?
  16. Snowflake's Avatar

i do not know when it maxes. i believe it makes on the 40th or 50th levels (5 loops of 10).

alot of games are like this. the games loops on certain levels, but later loops are harder. i know i know the sematnics are awkward cause if the later level is harder is it really the same level? so the word "loop" can be semantically debated here, but i trust those who have played games know what i mean

think frogger. 1-5 is pretty much all the game has. but 6-10 is a harder version of 1-5 (or isnt 4 and not 5, i dont remember but you get the idea)

RTM REPLY - I like the 720 Degrees challenge..."Average" or "Expert" placement, please, as I am not well-versed at that title.

I left off handicap challenges such as "Asteroids" (no command ship), "Missile Command" (no central base) and "Defender/Stargate" (no use of smart bomb, hyperspace or warping of any sort)...same with "No Hammer DK"...otherwise the list would be never-ending.

Might surprise you, but I'm REALLY tickled that you are aware/knowledgable about what Bryan did!

I *thought* I was playing one of the most classic games of all-time, lol, but time has kinda shown me "not so much", compared to the dot-munchers and barrel jumpers.

Tho I actually have no idea, I would imagine the BT K/S is one of the "least achieved" K/S's in the arcade stuff, even tho extra lives are so readily available. The commitment to playing it "properly"(i.e., grouping, etc)just seems different to me than any other game!

I imagine you do know the details-to "beat" the K/S, you have to play very slowly during the "regular game", using more time/less peppers, so you can save a bunch for the K/S, then strategically/maniacally throw peppers during it to reach a certain spot, where the baddies won't get you. After a while, they slow down to a pixel-crawl, and you have essentially "broken" the game. Bryan set a W/R on another arcade title WHILE BT was playing in "slo-mo", if that tells you how slow it is!(Friggin Wow!).

From there, it's endurance, just "how long can I go?".

TBH, even knowing it could be broken, I never strategized to bother to beat it-I knew that maximizing points, in an essentially "perfect game" to the K/S would get the MAME W/R, and I actually played very fast, according to J.D. Lowe, a typical K/S takes over four hours, I was a couple minutes over three hours.

Basically, I used "more peppers", to use "less time", tho that's kinda geek BT talk there!

    :D

Thanks for the game respect, and unquestionably BW is the Priest of the Church of Burgertime!!!

Also, tho it's not terribly difficult to do, a 1cc on Street Fighter 2 feels like a feather in the cap.

Late title, and probably not in the scope of the mentioned games so far, but something every gamer should "try to do".
