Discussion
6.18.19 - The current rule is absent regarding off-course driving. In a real life sanctioned race, only official laps are eligible for fastest lap track records. Continuous off-course driving that results in a gain (position or time reduction) is subject to penalties from track / race officials. These are usually time based penalties (+5 second penalties), position based (return positions gained), or stop and go based penalties (pit lane enforced).
Sarthe is a circuit with lots of chicanes, and therefore lots of opportunities to benefit from off-course driving. I estimate at least 8-12 seconds of time reduction is possible for using this technique. The rules neither explicitly prohibit or condone this strategy. The only guidance available for submitter's and adjudicators is the 'Spirit of the Game' clause in the general TG adjudication standards. Of course, this is highly subjective and debatable on both sides of the argument. For instance, is the 'Spirit' consistent with that of a speed run mentality - finish the lap / race as quick as possible, or is it to finish the lap / race as quick as possible in a simulated manner - mirroring common real-life racing organization rules. Thoughts to consider when adjudicating submissions to this track and others like it.
