Harder Donkey Kong rom?

  1. Harder Donkey Kong rom?

So I'm playing this Donkey Kong cab at an arcade show, and it seems to be alot harder than a normal DK game. For example, on the 1st rivet level, the fireballs all pop out immediately and act as if they're level 5 or higher (they're bouncing in place, racing up and down the ladders, etc). I make it to the first conveyor belt, and instead of 3 popping out of the oil tank slowly, 5 all fly out almost immediately like higher level gameplay. Anyone ever see a ROMset like this? The barrel and elevators seemed the same (although barrels seemed to steer down ladders more, but that may just be a coincidence). I haven't talked to the guy who owns the machine, but I'm gonna try and catch him sometime Sunday before everyone packs up.

Ken House had that ROM set in his DK machine when he got it, and I think he had to get a normal DK board, or the correct ROMs. So, I know that ROMset did exist, because his was doing what you described on the 1st rivet board.

Thanks for the info. I wonder how widely spread this ROM is? Voodoo_Chilly over at CAGDC had one too.

Hey, did you ever track this down? I'd be interested in giving this a try.

I might be wrong, but I do believe there was a re-release of DK around 1990. If so, that's probably these boards.

The only DK re-release I'm familiar with is the DK/DK Jr/Mario Bros multigame from Nintendo and sold by Namco, but that was in the early 2000's. Anyway, after talking with the guy, it sounds like it was just 2 ROM's that were different. He installed them on a regular DK board to make it harder so the games would be quicker at the show.

There are two differents sets of roms besides the tkg2 3 4. Nintendo actually had those roms made and an easy set to either decrease length of play on dk or increase it. You could send in a request to nintendo to get the other optional set of roms. They were also available for a harder or easier dk jr. I heard someone i know has the harder dk jr roms but very uncommon. No operator really took the time to send in for some roms.

I seen the nintendo memo from the 80's discussing this. So they harder roms are factory as well but special request.

    rome sets
    Nintendo Service Department Bulletin # TKG-02 12-11-81
    GAME: Donkey Kong
    SUBJECT: Speed-up Kit #1

TO prevent extremely long play times, we are making available
a speed-up kit. This kit prevents players from waiting on top
of ladders, on screen #1, while the barrels roll across
instead of coming donw on top of him. Whit this kit, barrels
will roll on top of the player on a ladder 70 to 80 percent of
    the time.

Machines above serial #30,000 will have this kit installed at
the factory, and all TKG4 board sets will come with this kit.

To install this kit in a four-board set, follow these

    1) Remove P.C. Boards from game, leaving them
    attached to P.C. Board bracket.

    2) Using a pair of needle-nose pliers, separate the
sound P.C. Board fromt he CPU P.C. Board, exposing
the entire surface of the CPU Board.

    3) Remove the EPROMS's at location 5F, 5A, 5H and 5K
from the CPU Board. (Note 5A should read 5G - MSH)

    4) Install the speed-up kit EPROM's in the corres-
    ponding locations.

    5) Reconnect the soun P.C. Board to the CPU P.C.
Board and mount the P.C. Boards in the game.

That kit included the following 4 EPROM's

USA (c) 1981 Nintendo of America set

Filename Label Type Loc/PCB *Label *Loc/PCB CSum
    --------- ---------- ------ ------- ---------- -------- ----
    2532.5K TKG4-C-5At 2532 5A(CPU) TKG3-C-5K 5K(CPU) A0F0
    2532.5H TKG4-C-5Bt 2532 5B(CPU) TKG3-C-5H 5H(CPU) B2BC
    2532.5G TKG4-C-5Ct 2532 5C(CPU) TKG3-C-5G 5G(CPU) 73BA
    2532.5F TKG4-C-5Et 2532 5E(CPU) TKG3-C-5F 5F(CPU) AA97

Not only did the eprom fix the ladder bug, but it also changed
the copyright screen to read "(C)1981 Nintendo of America".

That's not the one I'm talking about. All that one did was remove the "ladder cheat" and add "Nintendo of America" to the title screen on the early boardsets. This one actually changed the fireball behavior and made it like you were on a high level, even on level 1. Thanks for bulletins though. I'd seen that DK one before, but hadn't seen the DK Jr one.
